1. Be Site Specific
Think about the mood that you would like to create within your living room, and select artworks that fit the ambience you are going for. According to Ong, artworks with high contrast and deep tones, as well as paintings that are personally evocative, fit better in a study room or den, while pieces in soft hues can infuse a sense of restfulness and calm in areas of contemplation, such as the bedroom or a reading room. Scenes of landscapes and the sea for instance, are popular options in myriad spaces.
“Sea waves and other nature-inspired artworks are appreciated by many because of the soothing effect that they can create,” shares Meriana Liao, general manager of Lumas Singapore. She recommends displaying photographic prints of such scenes under acrylic glass, in a frameless mounting format. “The conscious decision to forgo a frame not only allows the work to blend seamlessly with the surface of the wall— it also gives it a modern, timeless character,” she explains. “A photo mounted under glossy or matte acrylic is the ideal way to present large-format nature shots, seascapes, as well as contemporary portraits.”
