Inspired by Japanese mindfulness and craftsmanship, the Zencha bathroom collection combines minimalism and innovation to create a modern living space that's worthy of relaxation

Name us a better place to relax than in your own bathroom, where self-care and rejuvenation go hand in hand. To complement this agenda, Sebastian Herkner has designed the Zencha bathroom collection, combining unusual above-counter basins with minimalistic furniture. The line's most striking feature is undeniably the rounded shape of the bathtubs and basins, which open into a graceful, outward-curving edge. These are paired with dual-walled sanitary objects made from sturdy DuraCeram® and DuraSolid®, promising longevity for its user.

“You can only manufacture technically sophisticated solutions like this in a consistent quality if, like Duravit, you have your own manufacturing facilities with the corresponding expertise and high levels of craftsmanship,” says Herkner. A tactile experience, every item included in the Zencha collection is made from sensual materials that provide comfort and support for every lifestyle activity. There is wood and textured glass, both of which are pleasant to the touch and are appealing to all senses.

The subtle art of geometry is very much at play in the Zencha collection. Herkner's main inspiration seems to have been the hand-made ceramic teacups he had discovered while on a trip to Japan. Gentle, organic shapes are transposed onto sanitary objects, made with DuraCeram® to enable above-counter basins that are robust and easy to care for. These consist of two differently shaped above-counter basins: one, a curved square measuring 420x420 mm, and another measuring 550x390 mm. Both come in colours white, white satin matte, grey satin matte, and anthracite matte.

Meanwhile, the Zencha bathtub, manufactured with DuraSolid®, impresses a warm feel with an elegant matte aesthetic. It comes in different sizes and is designed for its user to feel as if they are relaxing blissfully in deep water, much like a Japanese onsen bath. There is a free-standing tub available measuring 1250x1250 mm, 1600x850 mm, and lastly, 1800x900 mm—the latter of which comes with the option for an air whirl system integrated into the base for a gentle massage that's essential for optimum relaxation after a long, hard day.

Another hallmark of the Zencha collection is its versatility. Designed in a modular fashion, it can be deployed in a variety of ways: as open shelves or drawers with push-open and self-closing technology. As a storage area, the collection adds structure and warmth into the living space; it can also be customised into white super matt, taupe super matte, and graphite super matte colours to correspond to any bathroom. Cabinet fronts meanwhile come in natural oak and oak black colours—these allow the items to produce a tactile effect and a degree of sensual elegance that is playful and modern.

Lastly, Herkner has designed a separate mirror that emulates the contour of the round basins. Accentuated by an all-around LED strip, the light can be turned on and off via a sensor on the bottom edge of the mirror.

Perhaps the most laudable trait of the Zencha collection is its foundation. Each item is made with high-quality and sustainable materials. After working for over four years on the project, Herkner attests that, "Duravit represents tradition as well as expertise in the design and technical sectors". All made in Hornberg and Schenkenzell, each part of the collection is manufactured and then finished by hand before being sealed to be water-resistant and impervious to splashes and high humidity. Creative, versatile, and durable—it is truly the perfect addition to any bathroom one wishes to unwind in.
