Here’s what we know about the upcoming opening of Raffles Sentosa Resort & Spa and its design inspiration

Your next dream beach getaway might be closer to home than you would expect.

Announced today at a press conference held at Sofitel Singapore, Raffles Sentosa Resort & Spa is slated to open in 2022. It is located on a plot of land measuring over 100,000sqm and is located right next to the Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa. The new property will be built by Royal Group, which owns SO Sofitel Singapore and Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa.

Designed by New York and Toronto-based practice Yabu Pushelberg, this new Raffles Hotel property will feature 61 villas, each with its own swimming pool. Accommodation types range from the one-bedroom villa (measuring 260sqm) to an expansive four-bedroom villa (450sqm). Each villa comprises separate pavilions for the living area and the bedroom, as well as an outdoor pool that overlooks the surrounding greenery.

The inspiration behind the resort’s design starts with a fictional narrative—the journey of a young Singapore woman who returns home after years abroad to reconnect with her roots, by building a new home that brings together the treasures from her adventures while paying tribute to her local heritage.

“It’s a story about a young woman who grows up in a house of many generations; a family of great entertainers who love bringing people into their home,” shares Glenn Pushelberg, co-founder of Yabu Pushelberg, who was in Singapore for the press conference.

“This young lady had wanderlust and decided she wanted to see the world … After a few years, she wanted to come home. She decided she would build her own house, on a piece of land in the forest that overlooks the ocean… And our job is to make her dream come true.”

Highlights of the new property include an arrival building which houses a Writers’ Bar (a tea salon and cocktail lounge); its classic facade references the architecture of Raffles Hotel Singapore.

A footpath next to the arrival building will lead guests to the ballroom and the Three-Meal restaurant and a specialty restaurant on the rooftop, with a bridge connecting the Three-Meal restaurant to the main pool deck.

“As Raffles embarks on a second property in its native city, the brand returns to where it all began—we’re taking Raffles back to the beach,” quips Pushelberg, referencing the Beach Road location of Raffles Hotel Singapore.
