From a Kyoto garden residence to a Roman hotel overlooking St Peter’s Basilica, AXOR’s collaboration with Antonio Citterio turns the bathroom into the most reflective room in the house
Beyond a utilitarian space, the bathroom has become an undeniable sanctuary in the home. Such is the premise of AXOR’s collaboration with Antonio Citterio, who has set three distinctive bathroom concepts that blend global inspirations with Italian craftsmanship. Under the banner of “Escape The Ordinary”, each vignette is built around the same elemental idea: that the traveller who loves comfort would want to come home to a peaceful, reflective space.
For Citterio, each bathroom concept “is deeply inspired by the idea of a journey—both physical and sensory. We envisioned journeys through Japan, South Africa and Italy, with each place offering a unique perspective on design, culture and the relationship with water.”

The first concept portrays a minimalist and material-forward Japanese residence, where natural wood flooring and dynamic marble set the stage for the AXOR Citterio C collection. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow natural light to flow into the space, offering glimpses of a nearby historical garden. Within the space, tranquil rainfall flows from a ceiling-integrated shower. Meanwhile, a wall-mounted overhead provides the best flexibility when paired with a handheld shower fixture. The usage of brushed nickel ensures continuity in the space’s design, creating a serene atmosphere to usher in the day.
From Japan, Citterio guides homeowners into the verdant Western Cape of Africa. Here, the bathroom becomes a study in “simple elegance and raw, natural beauty.” Earthy tones of red local clay plaster are complemented by Palladian terrazzo underfoot and jewel-toned mosaic tiling in the shower, creating a theatrical ritual for modern life. At the centre of the vignette is the EcoSmartAXOR ShowerSphere, which features a generous, adjustable spray that delivers just 8 litres per minute. In contrast with such bold materials, brushed black chrome adds a firm, contrasting foundation to ground the space.

With the third concept, Citterio ushers homeowners back to his native Italy. Blending images of Mediterranean charm with the gravitas of Roman architecture, Rosso Levanto marble and travertine set the stage for a dreamlike, sophisticated experience. A terrace with sweeping views of St Peter’s Basilica forms the backdrop for the AXOR ShowerSphere overhead, paired with a multi-jet handheld for ease of use. The brushed bronze finish reflects the warmth of an afternoon in the Eternal City, no matter where one is in the world.
At the end of the day, what unites these three vignettes Antonio Citterio created for AXOR? “AXOR Cittorio C has simplicity and flexibility that allow for a seamless integration into a variety of environments,” Citterio mused. Such a personalised experience brings the most evocative elements of one’s travels into their home, creating an oasis of peace amid the demands of modern living.
