As creative industries evolve, design is no longer confined to static spaces or traditional disciplines. Taylor’s University’s Bachelor of Interactive Spatial Design (Honours) prepares students for a new generation of design careers by blending spatial thinking with emerging technology, interactive media and industry-driven learning

Graduates may specialise in Smart Homes Design, focusing on intelligent and responsive living spaces. They may also pursue Smart Environment Design, applying similar principles across larger built environments such as offices, public spaces, immersive installations, themed retail environments and experiential venues.

As Malaysia’s first private university to offer this programme, Taylor’s University continues to position itself at the forefront of emerging design education. Art & Design subjects at the institution are ranked among the world’s Top 100 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject in 2026.

Beyond the classroom, by design

The programme’s philosophy is rooted in a simple but powerful idea that real design skills are built through real experience. Programme Director Zeon Wong explains that while theoretical foundations remain important, the industry has moved far beyond them.

“Contemporary designers are now expected to craft engaging, interactive and human-centred experiences that combine technology, storytelling, emotion and an understanding of human behaviour,” he says. “Immersive learning enables students to interact directly with real-world environments, technologies, users and industry challenges.”

Prior learning experiences have included field-based sessions at the National Science Centre, National Botanical Gardens Shah Alam, REXPERIENCE in Kuala Lumpur and the National Art Gallery, as well as an international exchange opportunities that broaden students’ exposure to global design perspectives.

The programme also fosters interdisciplinary collaboration across creative disciplines. Students regularly work alongside peers from related design fields, including Interior Architecture, allowing them to experience how collaborative creative projects are developed in practice. One such project involved designing digital environments for a nature observatory at the National Botanic Gardens Shah Alam.

 “Design is no longer confined to static physical settings. It is shifting toward integrated experiences where physical, digital and virtual layers interact with human behaviour,” Wong explains. “These learning experiences help students understand that successful spatial design extends beyond aesthetics alone.”

Skills for an evolving landscape

Alongside core spatial design principles, students develop proficiency in areas including Extended Reality (XR), projection mapping, performative media, embedded systems, and interactive installations. Through hands-on experimentation with Raspberry Pi microcomputers, motion sensors, Python programming, and visual programming tools, students learn how to create responsive environments that trigger spatial data, automate interactions and power immersive physical installations. The approach bridges conceptual design with real-world technological application.

“Students develop versatile hybrid skill sets that are increasingly relevant in today's creative industries,” Wong says. “Designers are now expected to move beyond conventional spatial design to create immersive, responsive and intelligent experiences.”

The programme also offers a Triple Track model, allowing students to shape their academic journey through the Conventional route combining internship and capstone project, a Work-Based Learning track offering extended industry immersion, and a Technopreneurship pathway for students interested in building startups and ventures.

Learning on display

A defining aspect of the programme is its emphasis on public-facing creative practice. Rather than waiting until graduation, students are encouraged to prototype, exhibit and present their work throughout their studies in professional and cultural settings.

Past highlights include PULSE at Muzium Telekom, MIRROR at Filamen Gallery in GM Bukit Bintang, and Emerging Forms, an installation showcase exploring movement, interaction and spatial experience. Students have also participated in XR workshops and mixed reality showcases at The Starhill, alongside XR Jam MindScape 2024, Malaysia’s first XR and AI hackathon focused on mental wellness applications.

“As students present their work to public audiences, they learn how design can stimulate interaction, storytelling, emotional engagement and audience participation,” Wong says.

Aligned with the industry

Strong industry collaboration underpins the programme. Through partnerships with organisations including Experiential Design Team (EDT), XTS Technologies Sdn Bhd, FabU Design Sdn Bhd, Virtualtech Frontier Sdn Bhd, FRAMEMOTION, Filamen Sdn Bhd, VORTEX XR Lab, and Cuberlab Sdn Bhd, students gain exposure to real-world exhibition development, creative workflows and advanced production environments.

Students have also participated in the Travel Technology Mini Accelerator Programme with Amadeus and Taylor’s BizPod, blending design thinking with entrepreneurial application.

These collaborations provide students with valuable hands-on experience while helping them better understand the realities and opportunities within rapidly evolving creative industries.

Graduates of the programme may pursue careers across immersive design, smart environments, retail experiences, exhibition technologies and Extended Reality (XR), including roles such as Creative Technologist, Interactive Space Designer and Retail Experience Designer, among others.

Taylor’s Open Day takes place on August 1-2 and August 8-9, offering prospective students the opportunity to experience the university’s creative learning ecosystem firsthand. Applications for the Bachelor of Interactive Spatial Design (Honours) September intake are now open for students interested in pursuing careers that are now among the most sought-after in the creative sector.
