Give your kitchen a luxurious, practical upgrade with inventive products from Poggenpohl and Cesar, available at Xtra
For homeowners with a passion for cooking and entertaining, the kitchen is certainly the social centre of the home, with well- appointed culinary zones acting as a nexus for everything from family meals to even workspaces for telecommuting. Good-looking, multifunctional kitchens are even being incorporated into open-plan living rooms, as the old distinctions between utilitarian areas and communal zones continue to crumble.
“Culinary experiences, whether in cooking or eating, are as important today as travel, fashion, art and automobiles,” declares Lim Choon Hong, founder and managing director of reputed furniture retailer Xtra, adding that “more memories are created with friends and family at the dining table and kitchen than in the confines of our living room”.
Founded in 1989, Xtra has carved a niche as a purveyor of contemporary furniture that places a premium on innovation and style. Joining the firm’s roster of kitchen systems are Poggenpohl and Cesar, two established European brands that are known for their functionality and luxurious designs.
To showcase these brands’ products, Xtra appointed award-winning design practice Produce to craft special display areas for each that have their own unique character, which customers can immerse themselves in to discover their own ideal kitchen space. Unique elevated panels demarcate the various tableaus and feature different materials to provide inspiration on how customers can personalise their own kitchens at home.

Total works of art
Exacting German precision and craftsmanship imbue every Poggenpohl product with a sense of luxury and utility. Founded in 1892 as a family business, the kitchen furniture manufacturer’s calling cards of innovation, timeless elegance and exceptional craftsmanship have established it as a mainstay in stylish culinary spaces around the world. The brand offers a wide variety of styles, so there’s something to match any individual preference whether you are a house-proud individual, design enthusiast or professional chef.
Visitors to Xtra will be able to peruse the German brand’s +Modo and +Segmento product ranges, which are bold design statements, yet eminently practical. For instance, the minimalist +Modo kitchen island forgoes the traditional design for a unique form that offsets the worktop from the cabinetry, with the resulting void acting as a handy space for utensils or personal accessories. The architectural +Segmento series boasts a countertop that is only 14mm thick, and sleek lines that are characterised by the absence of handles, replaced by automatically opening fronts.

Italian flair

Made entirely in Italy, Cesar kitchens would fit into any modern abode with their contemporary forms and well-considered layouts that make full use of space. A broad range of styles, encompassing customisable options as well as opulent finishes, fulfils diverse lifestyles and preferences.
Some of the highlights from the Venice-based brand include the Maxima 2.2 kitchen system, a cross-functional design available as an island or in a traditional layout. Shaker-style cabinet doors in a 1cm-wide frame impart a modern yet classic look, while customers will be spoilt for choice with more than 90 finishes available.
Another range, the 50s, can be used in the kitchen or living room, and puts a present-day spin on storage systems and bookshelves from the 1950s. This system comprises drawers, open shelves, units with doors, stemware racks and home office desks, and can even be fitted with household appliances such as coffee machines and ovens for unmatched usability.
