Through ‘King’s Gambit’, the Danish-Irish designer presents a new, exciting journey from candles and lighting to metal sculptures
Through his latest collection, King’s Gambit, the designer Patrick Coard who moved from Paris to Manila with his entire family expressed his feeling of “being truly at home in my life right now.”
Together with Kaye Tinga, he launched King’s Gambit at W17 last May 16, 2023. “Each sculpture explores new ambitious scales, different ethereal qualities, and constantly pushes boundaries,” he explained.

Upon entering the atelier, Coard’s first creation, the “Oval Queen”, welcomed guests. Every nook and cranny of this place was planned by the designer with all things positioned strategically. The “Oval Queen” overlooks her “children”—Prometheus, Birds Eye, and the Tower—three of his other works in the collection. In the atrium, the evolution of this family is much more visible, as scales increased and shapes matured into new designs.

“I wanted to create an immersive experience for the guests,” said Coard. Using the warehouse’s “incredible” space, he created cinematic scenes through the gridlock installation with translucent fabric to juxtapose against the monolith of brass sculptures. The different layers of material that formed shadows from the shapes of the pieces were an invitation to interact with the whole installation.

“I have always believed in an organic way of approaching things,” he said. “After spending intense few weeks creating these sculptures and curating them within Tinga’s W17, the energy felt so pure, positive and exciting that I hoped people would feel this and connect with the pieces in their way.” And connected with the pieces they did.
The viewing experience was a delight to all the guests. Coard invited a diverse group of people, from his dearest friends like the Santos and Prieto family to iconic architects like Ramon Antonio and interior designer Jonathan Matti, to diplomats like the Spanish Ambassador to the Philippines Miguel Utray. They mingled while enjoying the generous flow of wine, Aperol spritz, vodka and gin cocktails, after which they feasted over a delicious spread prepared by Margarita Forés.

“I think W17 is an iconic space in Manila . . . The warehouse architecture with the incredible volume in height was the perfect marriage to the scale of my sculptures,” said Coard. “It was honestly such a fulfilling and fun evening. I am truly honoured to have launched this collection here in Manila with my family and W17.”
