Cover Upstairs_ creative director Dennis Cheok explores the laminate selection in the Arova showroom

Designed by UPSTRS_, local laminate brand Arova's new showroom features inspiring sculptures and a statement wall comprising colourful blocks

Laminates are versatile decorative materials with many applications. They can be applied to a wall feature or used on countertops, cabinetry and shelves to add pops of colour to an interior or create a layered look with finishes that reference the appearance of wood, marble and other natural materials.

When UPSTRS_ creative director Dennis Cheok was tasked to design a new showroom for local laminate brand Arova, he sought to celebrate these myriad uses, while creating a clean-lined space that could serve as an experiential centre for homeowners and designers.

“The brief given to the showroom designer was to integrate technology into this space, while making it look out of the ordinary, instead of a typical showroom,” shares Eric Lim, founder of Arova. “We’ll like to support more local design talents, and moving forward, we’ll like more people to be aware of the versatile uses of laminates.”

Located at a street-facing unit at the Vertex complex on 33 Ubi Avenue 3, the showroom is designed as an inspiring space for homeowners and designers alike to explore. One its most striking elements is the ‘Pixel City’ area, which features removable rectangular blocks clad in laminates of various colours. Its pixellated look is echoed in the design of the ceiling near the entrance.

The main reception area also features pivoted walls and foldable platforms, which allow for maximum flexibility in the space; the showroom is currently displaying sculptures created by local firms ArchLuxe, Quod Architects, and Sujonohun; these design firms were named among the emerging talents to watch at the Tatler Design Awards 2021 held this April. The showroom also features a digital visualiser that allows visitors to envision the use of laminates in various rooms, as well as made-in-Spain cabinetry accessories from Boxx Euro, the sister brand of Arova. “The biggest satisfaction is to have created an ever-evolving space where Arova can continue to collaborate and innovate with our local creatives,” says Cheok.
