The product designer discusses his newest exhibition and how he made a light bulb an object to covet

A former child actor, fashion designer, and now a product designer—British design darling Lee Broom's colourful life has given his collections a theatrical sensibility that makes each presentation hotly anticipated.

“All of those different disciplines instil this emotional way of designing and seeing everything I do as a sort of performance,” shares Broom, when we spoke to him during his recent visit during Singapore Design Week in March. “I like that when people come to see my shows, they don’t just have a visual or tactile reaction; they have some kind of emotional response.”

His most recent installation, Park Life, is no exception. Located at the underground carpark of the Space Furniture showroom in Sydney, Australia, the exhibition’s maze-long corridors take visitors through a journey through Broom’s collections throughout the years. A section of the Sydney exhibition was adapted for the Singapore edition, which is displayed at Space Furniture Singapore from now to April 14.

“I wanted to do a maze for many years; I thought it would be an interesting way of taking a journey through all my product ranges and my career,” he quips. Broom, who formerly worked for Vivienne Westwood, started his eponymous brand in 2007, and has created over 100 furniture, lighting and accessories in over a decade since.

In the video below, he discusses his creative process, why lighting matters and the inspiration behind his Park Life installations that were exhibited at Space Furniture Singapore and Space Furniture Sydney, Australia.
