The meet saw the country taking home a total of three golds and four bronze medals

Paralympian Yip Pin Xiu has won two out of three golds for Singapore at the Para Swimming World Series Australia.

The 31-year-old backstroke swimmer, who was born with muscular dystrophy, scored her first gold at the meet in the women’s 100m backstroke multi-class event. She clocked a timing of 2min 20.98sec and achieved 733 points. Coming in second was Canada’s Aurelie Rivard followed by Australian Jasmine Greenwood in third.

In multi-class para swimming events, the swimmer who posts the time closest to the world record for their impairment classification wins.

Yip won her second gold on the final day of the meet in the women’s 50m backstroke. She achieved it with a timing of 1min 3.70sec and 810 points, beating out China’s He Shenggao and New Zealand’s Erin Knox.

In her professional career, Yip has won five Paralympic golds.

Her fellow Singapore teammates, Paralympians Toh Wei Soong and Danielle Moi as well as siblings Sophie and Colin Soon, also took home four bronze medals and one gold medal at the meet. This brings Singapore’s total medal count for the three-day event held at the Melbourne Sports Centre to three golds and four bronze.

Australia marks the opening leg of the Para Swimming World Series, which will take place across nine countries worldwide, including Singapore, from February to October this year.
