What caused his condition?
Malaysia's national track cyclist, Azizulhasni Awang recently underwent open-heart surgery in Australia. During a press conference, the 34-year-old Olympic silver medallist explained that he needed the surgery for anomalous aortic origin of the right coronary artery, a rare congenital cardiac condition in which the coronary artery arises from the wrong aortic sinus.
According to Azizul, he was referred by his family doctor to consult with a heart cardiologist in Melbourne for checks after he experienced chest pains in February.
Malaysia's National Sports Institute chief executive officer, Ahmad Faedzal Ramli said the decision was made for him to undergo surgery as soon as possible at the Epworth Richmond Hospital in Victoria. "Azizul's heart condition is very rare, hence the specialist in Australia had advised him to undergo the corrective heart surgery as soon as possible as the risk of cardiac arrest was very high."
Azizul is now focused on making a full recovery and plans to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympics, which would be his fifth Olympic outing.
