Experts Chin-Rothman and Ooi share insights on cultivating the innovator’s mindset for entrepreneurs
It’s no secret that the ability to innovate and adapt is crucial for entrepreneurs and leaders who want to retain a competitive edge. Steve Jobs, the late co-founder of Apple, once said, “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.”
George Courous, author of The Innovator’s Mindset: Empowering Learning, Unleash Talent and Lead a Culture of Creativity, points out how this thinking method fosters taking chances, trying new things and learning from mistakes. For leaders, the innovator’s mindset also helps them empower their teams to think differently, experiment with new ideas and drive growth through innovation. It empowers not just leaders but every employee too.
Caitlin Chin-Rothman, a fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington DC, and Ooi Boon Sheng, founder and CEO of the Malaysian cloud-based point of sale solution designer Xilnex, offer valuable insights into how the innovator’s mindset can be applied daily.

Embrace curiosity and continuous learning

To cultivate an innovator’s mindset, leaders must embrace change and uncertainty, both necessary for growth and progress. Its adoption involves a willingness to take risks and explore new possibilities, even if it means facing failure along the way. As Chin-Rothman notes, “Having the innovator’s mindset is a lifestyle or a set of habits to develop—one that helps solve current problems but also looking ahead at the big picture, considering short and long-term needs, and understanding what might be helpful in the future.”
This approach includes staying informed about industry trends, actively seeking mentorship opportunities and consistently pursuing new knowledge and skills. Ooi stresses the importance of experimentation in driving innovation, “Speaking from experience, we empower our teams to test new ideas, analyse outcomes and iteratively refine their approaches to foster continuous improvement.”
Question assumptions

Challenging assumptions is vital for fostering a culture of innovation and driving progress, as it encourages new perspectives and innovative thinking. Chin-Rothman explains, “It is important to ask questions. Don’t assume you know the answers. Fostering an open environment also allows others a chance to speak up and ask questions. Allowing people to speak their minds fosters new ideas and helps develop a more creative environment.”
Ooi, drawing from his leadership experience, emphasises the importance of transparency about mistakes, which builds a culture of humility and continuous learning. He highlights the value of questioning assumptions and thoroughly assessing situations before forming opinions.

Encourage experimentation and calculated risk-taking

Promoting experimentation and calculated risk-taking is crucial for driving innovation forward, as it encourages trying new ideas and making informed decisions. Ooi shares, “At Xilnex, we balance experimentation with the need to deliver results by setting clear parameters for experimentation and aligning them with our business objectives. This way, we can take calculated risks while maintaining a focus on achieving our goals.”
According to Chin-Rothman, the key to unlocking a team’s full potential lies in creating an environment where every member feels empowered to ask questions and share their unfiltered thoughts. “When team members ask questions, it forces me to reflect on my thought processes and consider alternative approaches. This not only helps me improve my own thinking but also leads to innovative solutions that might not have emerged otherwise.”
Building a team with diverse backgrounds and experiences not only enriches perspectives but also fosters a dynamic exchange of ideas and creativity, leading to more innovative solutions. “When everyone feels empowered to contribute, we can collectively work towards a common goal and achieve more effective outcomes,” she adds.

Understand and empower team members

Effective teamwork is built on a foundation of empathy and understanding, where each member feels seen, heard and valued. To unlock a team’s full potential, leaders should focus on establishing meaningful connections by recognising individual team member strengths, addressing challenges collaboratively and understanding what motivates each person. Chin-Rothman says, “A core part of working in a team is to be understanding of where your teammates are, both personally and professionally. Discover how to best encourage them positively to really explore the scope of what they can do.”
To achieve this, she suggests that leaders that want to implement the innovator’s mindset must be willing to listen actively, provide constructive feedback and create opportunities for growth and development. By implementing these strategies within an innovator’s mindset, leaders can tap into the full potential of their team members, leading to a culture characterised by innovation, creativity and a continuous flow of new ideas.

To drive innovation, it is crucial to adapt to change and overcome resistance effectively. This allows for growth, the exploration of new opportunities and the development of a culture that embraces experimentation and learning. Chin-Rothman explains, “Change can be challenging, but it often requires taking bold steps, such as switching jobs, acquiring new skills or exploring new interests. By embracing change, we can unlock new possibilities and drive innovation.”
Ooi emphasises the importance of collective accountability and a growth mindset in fostering an innovator’s mindset. “We conduct retrospectives to analyse what went wrong in a project or product, focusing on learning and improvement rather than blame. By implementing key measurements to track progress, we can ensure that we are continually improving and driving success.”
