We answer a question we’re frequently asked: How do I get on the Gen.T List? Here is the definitive guide

The Gen.T team gets asked very often: How do you get on the Tatler Gen.T List? Where do you apply? What is the selection criteria? What is the value of being part of this Asia-wide community?

This article will provide you with the answers to these questions and give you a glimpse of how we put together the Gen.T List every year.

The nomination

Since we started in 2016, the Gen.T List has been established as the definitive guide to the most promising young leaders in Asia.

Every year, we recognise 300 individuals who are helping to shape the future of the region in their own ways, be it through technology, creativity or advocacy. And as our community grows bigger, word spreads—which explains the thousands of applications we get via our public nomination form for the list every year.

Read on to learn more about the timeline of the list and how to get your application noticed.

The criteria

The first thing we look for in a potential honouree is their achievement in the last 18 months.

This can be measured by several metrics: growth of business (measured by customers, revenue, volume, and so on), fundraising success, a new product or service that’s disrupting an industry, an increased geography of impact, receiving respected industry awards, and so on. As we cover 20 different categories, we don’t have only one set of metrics.

At Gen.T, we believe that success is defined by more than financial terms, so we also look at more qualitative metrics. Plus, the list features more than just entrepreneurs; we believe in strength in diversity, so you’ll also find artists, chefs, athletes, activists, cultural leaders and others on the Gen.T List. On these occasions we ask ourselves, has the nominee helped to make the world…

  • more beautiful?
  • more creative?
  • more innovative?
  • more generous?
  • more sustainable?
  • more human?

If we can confidently answer yes to one or more of the above, you’re in with a shot.

The profile

A nominee must be either:

  • A founder or co-founder of their own company.
  • A C-suite executive who’s playing a key role in changing their organisation.
  • An individual who is their own brand, such as an athlete, actor, musician or artist.

Honourees must be under 40 years old in the year the list is unveiled.

The timeline

The Gen.T List launches in June. Applications are vetted for the list between January and April.

We stop accepting all nominations for the year, both from the public nomination form and other sources, at the end of February. But nominations can still be submitted throughout the rest of the year—we will consider them for the next appropriate year.

Get noticed

We conduct intensive market research throughout the year, keeping an eye on the news, as well as industry publications, to see who’s making waves, who’s winning medals or awards, and so on.

If you want to get noticed for the list, make some noise! Orchestrate a splashy launch, announce an impressive fundraising round, expand into new markets, announce an innovative new product—get attention for all the right reasons.

We also receive numerous referrals through our extensive network, all of whom are added to our longlist. If you want to get noticed, ask someone with the gravitas to back your inclusion on the list. Reach out to the most heavyweight industry leaders in your address book and ask if they’ll nominate you for the list. Tell them to email editor@tatlerasia.com with your nomination, and that you’ll be eternally grateful.

You can also reach out to the members of our Tribe. More on them below.

The vetting process

First, we assemble the Tribe. Made up of industry titans across a breadth of fields, and featuring new faces each year, the Tribe nominates candidates for consideration and helps vet our longlist to help Gen.T identify the most deserving honourees. They are our eyes and ears on the ground, providing invaluable insight and expertise.

January to April is when most of the work takes place to whittle down our longlist. During this period, the Gen.T editorial team curates a longlist of nominees. As well as internal nominations, names for the longlist come from Tribe members, past years’ Gen.T honourees and members of the public, through our public nomination form. At well over 1,000 names strong every year, it’s at least three times the length of the final list.

After we have finalised our longlist, we begin a rigorous in-house vetting process to reach the final 300. During this process, we organise meetings with our Tribe members to get clarity on the reasons for their nominations, as well as further insight into their industry.

Over more than 250 hours of vetting meetings, which take place in our offices across Asia, our team uses a proprietary scoring system to rate the candidates and finalise all of the Leaders of Tomorrow on the Gen.T List.

Once the list is finalised, we reach out to our newest honourees to arrange photo shoots.

In June, we reveal the Gen.T List online here as well as at official celebratory events across Asia.

The best way to get your name in front of our vetting teams is to use our public nomination form, or ask someone else to nominate you using the form. If you have any further questions about what we look for, contact us at editor@tatlerasia.com.

FAQs

What markets does the Gen.T List cover?
We cover eight markets: Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, mainland China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand.

Is the Gen.T List produced by the Tribe?
No. The Tribe is the expert panel we consult when producing the list but is only one of our sources of information. The list is produced through a rigorous vetting process, with the final decision resting with Gen.T.

Can an honouree be on the Gen.T List multiple times?
Yes—if they have had a significant achievement since their last inclusion that warrants a repeat inclusion on a highly curated list. Honourees can be included a maximum of two years in a row.

How many categories does the Gen.T List have?
We have a total of 20 categories. You can see them all by applying the ‘industry’ filter on the Gen.T List.

Can multiple co-founders appear on the Gen.T List?
Yes, within limits. Every person on the Gen.T List must be weighted on their individual contributions, even if they come from the same company.

What are the perks of being part of the Gen.T community?
As an honouree, you will have access to highly curated events organised with you in mind. This ranges from roundtables with prominent business leaders to private parties and networking sessions with like-minded innovators and creators to an exclusive invitation to our annual ideas and innovation festival, the Tatler Gen.T Summit

You will also be entitled to privileges such as media coverage and a direct connection to the rest of the Gen.T and wider Tatler community of influential changemakers across Asia.
