Alongside the GrabScholar programme, the company also opens a GrabMerchant Centre to help its SME partners grow their online presence

This year marks 10 years since Anthony Tan and Tan Hooi Ling started Grab in Kuala Lumpur. The company, now Southeast Asia’s leading superapp, commemorated the occasion with the official opening of its new headquarters in Singapore. The 42,000 sq ft of office space will house some 3,000 employees, a research and development facility, and a new merchant centre to help small businesses grow online.

The new GrabMerchant Centre was one of two new initiatives that the technology company announced at the opening on August 11. It will offer business consultation services, workshops and operational assistance to Grab’s SME merchant partners, with the aim of helping them improve their online presence.

Grab also announced a second initiative, the GrabScholar programme, which sees the company committing US$1 million every year from its GrabForGood Fund to provide educational bursaries and university scholarships to students across all the Southeast Asian markets it operates in.

It aims to provide more than 2,000 bursaries and scholarships annually, in order to help primary to university students cover their tuition and study-related expenses. Internship opportunities will also be offered to tertiary students.

The GrabScholar programme was first launched last month in Indonesia in partnership with Yayasan Benih Baik Indonesia, an organisation focused on improving the lives of vulnerable and underprivileged people through education, employment, environmental preservation and food security.

At the opening yesterday, Tan said of the new initiatives: “As we celebrate Grab’s 10th anniversary this year, we hope that our announcements today will help small businesses and our future workforce upskill and maximise their opportunities, even in this challenging macro environment.”
