In this special Mother’s Day series, startup founder Verleen Goh of Alchemy Foodtech describes the memories of her pregnancy and how motherhood has changed her in the very first letter to her three-month-old son, Asher

Dear Asher,

I vividly remember the moment I suspected I was pregnant with you. I was on a work trip in Thailand and I put down my glass of wine after taking a sip as a precaution. After returning home to Singapore, I got myself tested and there it was, two red lines that gave us what we had been hoping for for years.

I remember showing that stick to Daddy and how he smiled silly for a good 30 seconds. I remember feeling anxious yet grateful, and thinking how our world was about to change.

With you in my tummy, we travelled around Asia—though they were mostly work trips. You followed me to seven countries before you were born, and I remember thinking I can’t wait for you to grow up so we can travel the world together.

I remember feeling really hungry during my first trimester, but so lucky not to experience morning sickness. I remember exclaiming in sadness to Daddy that I couldn’t fit into my loosest pair of pants anymore, but enjoying my growing belly.

I finally understood why all mummies love to rub their tummies; it was like I was touching you.

Having you made me more determined, calm and positive. I knew I needed to be mentally strong and prepared for the unexpected and uncontrollable with you around. It’s much like running a startup, where I will again be going down an unbeaten path. Fortunately, you have been an easy child, despite the occasional crazy moments, and I can only count my blessings that I have you.

You are now three months old and seeing you grow every day is fascinating.

You were so small at first, only about the length of Daddy’s arms when you were born. Now, you can lift your head and smile at us. You found your hands and we adore your “guilty” looks whenever we catch you chewing them. I love baby-carrying you to sleep, but you can now even sit facing front to see the world through your curious eyes!

Thank you for choosing me to be your Mummy and being such an angel. You are the cutest little human and I hope you grow up healthy and brilliant, and hopefully much taller than Mummy.

Loving you with all my heart,

Your Mummy
