Here's everything you need to know about the opening of the Gen.T library in Cambodia
At the Hong Kong unveiling event for the Gen.T List 2018, Generation T announced a CSR partnership with global literacy charity Room to Read.
On the night, we announced that Gen.T was sponsoring 50 girls in Cambodia’s Kampong Cham province through a year of schooling—one student for every Hongkonger on the Gen.T List that year.
In addition, we committed to raising US$35,000 to build a Gen.T library in the country. By the time of the following year’s Hong Kong unveiling event, we were delighted to be able to announce we had reached that target—and the library would be opening within the year.
The library is currently being installed in Trapaing Kroleung Primary School in Kampong Speu province.

The money raised covers the cost of everything needed to establish and run a library, including filling it with 1,705 local-language books and 144 English books; training courses with the school’s teaching staff and librarians on how to build students’ literacy skills; and the cost of running it for a period of three to four years, until it is self-sustaining.
Why a library? Because 750 million people in the world can’t read or write—and two thirds are women or girls. In Cambodia, second grade students in schools with Room to Read libraries read 2.3 times as fast as students in nearby control schools. We subscribe to the charity’s driving force: “World change starts with educated children.”
In early 2020, Gen.T will take a delegation of honourees to officially open the library in what will be our first Gen.T Travel Experience—mission and impact-driven travel experiences curated to inspire our community.

As well as the visit to the school to engage with the students and officially open the library, the two-day trip will include a symposium—featuring talks and sharing sessions with inspirational speakers—as well as a tour of startups in the country’s capital, Phnom Penh.
