The multidisciplinary studio collaborates with lifestyle space provider Staytion to create multi-purpose spaces within Singapore’s MRT train stations for commuters to work, meet, dine and shop

Late last month, a first-of-its-kind multi-concept space was launched at an MRT train station in Singapore to enable commuters to work, meet, dine and shop all in one place. The brainchild of lifestyle and co-working space provider Staytion, the space was created in response to the growing demand for hybrid work arrangements.

Designed in collaboration with Farm, an award-winning multi-disciplinary firm co-founded by 2018 Gen.T honouree Selwyn Low, the Staytion outlet features areas for specific needs, such as working desks, private studios, meeting rooms, cafes and cosy reading nooks.

The team at Farm’s research and development arm, Farmacy, spent months ideating with Staytion on the design concept of the space. The objective: to create a holistic and “differentiated experience” that would “allow users to resonate better with the space” and not only serve a singular purpose, says Jane Toh, founder and CEO of Staytion.

“Multi-concept spaces have been growing in momentum where businesses are progressively bringing complementary trades to co-exist alongside each other to co-support revenue growth,” adds Peter Sim, who co-founded Farm with Low.

Staytion and Farm use convertible design elements such as retractable walls, stackable chairs and tables on wheels to ensure that it can react easily to customer demand. Poufs and terrazzo tables are also used to create a comfortable and welcoming space, while printers, secure wi-fi and an unlimited supply of drinks are provided to help people stay productive.

Staytion will launch two more outlets and a lifestyle centre featuring restaurants and a lounge by year-end. By 2040, the company hopes to have one Staytion outlet in all 80 MRT stations across Singapore.
