To commemorate the occasion, the technology company seeks to inspire people to think better for the future

On October 5, 1992, American vocal harmony group Boyz II Men’s song End of the Road reached the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. As its lyrics described the closure of a chapter, elsewhere in the US, one brand was starting its journey to becoming an icon.

The ThinkPad made its debut the same day, introduced by its then-owner, the technology company IBM. The personal computer (PC) brand would later become widely known for its technology and innovation and sell more than 200 million units worldwide. Since 2005, the brand has been under Lenovo, which acquired IBM’s PC and laptop business.

Remembering the past, thinking of the future

When the first ThinkPad laptop launched, it was considered cutting-edge in design and technology. One of its features stood out more than others—a red nub in the middle of the keyboard that had never been seen on a laptop before. Officially called the TrackPoint, the mouse solution has since become a signature design of ThinkPad laptops.

Fast forward to 2022, Lenovo is celebrating the ThinkPad turning 30 and it has created a special edition of its X1 Carbon model for the occasion. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10 30th Anniversary Edition is powered by Intel vPro® Platform, Built for Business and features design elements that commemorate the anniversary.

The laptop also shows why, for the last three years, Lenovo has been recognised as one of the world’s most sustainable companies. It is packaged in a fully compostable box made from bamboo and sugarcane fibre. And exclusively for Singapore, each online purchase of the laptop from now until November 30 will come with a limited-edition sleeve designed by local stationery maker Bynd Artisan, made entirely from sustainable materials.

Only 5,000 units of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10 30th Anniversary Edition will ever be produced, each bearing a commemorative serial number.

As part of the ThinkPad’s anniversary campaign, which is powered by Intel®, Lenovo has also released its first Think Report 2022. The global research study examines society’s current state of thinking and how we can rethink the way we think. It also discusses how technology enables better, more purposeful thinking, and allows for new and greater impacts to be made.

Celebrating innovation

Insights from the report will be discussed further during a panel co-organised by Lenovo and Gen.T on November 24.

Two panellists will engage in a conversation about the art and science of building an innovative company, moderated by Gen.T’s Lee Williamson. Both speakers are Gen.T honourees—Rena Dharmawan and Maxim Tint—who are harnessing technology to innovate and solve challenges within their respective industries.

Dharmawan wears multiple hats: she’s a consultant surgeon at the Singapore General Hospital and National Cancer Centre Singapore, a co-founder of two medtech startups and an academic who helped establish a healthcare innovation programme for students at Duke-NUS Medical School.

Her co-panellist, Tint, is tackling inefficiencies in the property and hospitality sectors. His company GTriip uses machine learning to auto-verify photo identifications, and biometric sensors and digital keys on smartphones to allow people to check in and access commercial buildings, such as hotels and offices, more quickly, securely and contactless.

The panel is part of a private event held in Singapore that will mark the start of Lenovo and Gen.T’s partnership. The event will bring together 80 tech founders, business leaders and partners of Lenovo from across the region in celebration of the ThinkPad’s 30th anniversary.

Aligned in their missions to catalyse positive impact, Lenovo and Gen.T will work together to amplify the stories of millennial and Gen Z innovators across Asia while encouraging people to think better and deeper through a series of inspiring content.
