Co-founder and chief creative officer of Imaginary Ones, Clement Chia unveils the details of the new game for young adults and how he’s already planning for his next game

The Ready For Launch series asks questions to entrepreneurs to get the inside story behind a new startup or product launch

In April 2022, creative entrepreneur Clement Chia’s NFT project Imaginary Ones sold out its first collection in four minutes. The collection comprised 8,888 unique NFTs featuring cheerful, cherubic 3D animated characters.

Following its success, Imaginary Ones collaborated with fashion brand Hugo to create a collection of special-edition NFTs and fashion merchandise.

It also launched the next phase of its project, Imaginary Rides, which hinted at its grander plans for the future: launching a mobile game.

Fast forward months of planning and development and that game has just soft launched today: Bubble Rangers, a mobile game that Imaginary Ones hopes will help make it become a household name.

We spoke with Chia ahead of the release of Bubble Rangers to learn more about the game and what else is in the pipeline for the project.

For those who might not be familiar with Imaginary Ones, can you give an introduction to the project?

Clement Chia (CC): Imaginary Ones is an NFT collection that has 8,888 fully animated and 3D characters on the Ethereum network. My team and I see the project as a way to spread love, positivity and creativity using art.

The NFT space has been very male-dominated and we wanted to change this, so we decided to create an inclusive collection that would appeal to individuals of all ages and genders. This is why our characters are designed with a cheery, optimistic vibe and spread the message of “Live your most colourful life”.

What are your goals for Imaginary Ones?

CC: We are a family-friendly brand and we have mapped out multiple pillars that we would like to achieve, which include NFTs, games, toys and figurines, fashion and merchandising, and even movies or [animated] shows.

We want to become a household brand that appeals to both adults and children, like Pokémon. We would love to have young fans who will share their love for Imaginary Ones with their own children when they grow up.

We also want to work with global brands to bring awareness to Web3 and showcase its current and potential benefits.

Imaginary Ones’ first mobile game, Bubble Rangers, just soft launched. Can you tell us more about it?

CC: Bubble Rangers is an endless runner game that is available for iOS and Android devices. It shares gameplay elements with titles such as Temple Run, Subway Surfers and the like, but it comes with both Web2 and Web3 elements.

We are planning to implement additional gamification mechanics, where players can not only gain in-game digital assets but also win actual gifts such as Imaginary Ones plushies and merchandise.

There is no lack of endless runner mobile games out there. Why did you choose this genre of games?

CC: We initially explored a few different genres but at the end of the day, we wanted a more family-driven game that had simple mechanics so anyone could just pick up and play it. This goes back to our core of being a family-friendly company; we wanted to create a game that parents could enjoy with their kids.

Keeping players coming back to your game is challenging. What are some of your plans on how to do so?

CC: One of the ideas we would like to implement is mini-challenges to keep our audience engaged. This could be along the lines of recording yourself playing with your children or parents to win a plushie.

Like most other games, we will also frequently add new content to the game such as adding more characters to expand the storyline and more in-game items like legendary skins that will entice players to keep trying to acquire them.

We will also constantly update our maps, changing how they look and the obstacles in them, to keep the game feeling fresh and challenging.

Finally, we plan to infuse Bubble Rangers with elements of our partners via partnership deals. This will see us adding in limited edition items or even have our maps change to reflect the said partnership. One of the examples I can think of is having the map transform into a catwalk or runway for a fashion brand partner.

What comes after Bubble Rangers for Imaginary Ones?

CC: We will continue to build up the IP and its merchandise. We are currently working on two big plans for the future: The first would be releasing another game in 2024 called Bubble Riders. The second is that we are in the early stages of planning an animated film, which we are very excited about.

At the end of the day, we just want to continue to expand this imaginary world, which has gained many fans all over the world in a short time. We cherish the support of our fans and will continue to produce content for them to enjoy and share.
