The restaurant is popular among business people and tourists, so expect a bustling night that resembles the old Shanghai. As its name suggests, Yè Shanghai excels in Shanghainese cuisine with a modern twist. The menu offers a wide range of traditional specialities. For starters, a tea leaf smoked egg with a golden yolk that is incredibly tasty, though the flavour of the tea leaf could be stronger. Juicy but by no means oily, the steamed pork dumplings provides a subtle sweetness of soup enlivened by a dash of vinegar. Baked stuffed crab shells offer satisfying bites of fresh and succulent crabmeat, the portion is quite small which could serve as a perfect small bite. Unlike most Shanghainese restaurants, Yè Shanghai offers a lighter version of braised Tianjin cabbage in cream sauce, catering to those who live a greener lifestyle. The crispy roast chicken is, however, plain and dry. Dessert turns out to be a surprise; the ginger panna cotta with pommelo and candied orange has a strong and refreshing ginger flavour, and the black sesame in rice dumplings with wine and osmanthus is fragrant and delicious. The wine list offers a fine selection of red and white wines from around the world. Chinese wine and other beverages are also available. Staff are friendly, attentive and courteous, but the service can be a slightly slow.
