Blending contemporary design with traditional Chinese elements, the setting of yè shanghai is upscale and impressive. The restaurant is popular among business people and tourists, so expect an upbeat and bustling night that resembles the old Shanghai. As its name suggests, Yè Shanghai excels in Shanghainese cuisine with a modern twist. The menu offers a wide range of traditional specialities. For starter, tea leaf smoked egg with golden egg yolk in the centre is attractive and tasty, though the flavour of tea leaf could be stronger. Juicy but by no means oily, steamed pork dumplings provides a subtle sweetness of soup enlivened by the vinegar. Baked stuffed crab shells offer satisfying bites of fresh and succulent crabmeat, the portion is however quite small. Unlike most Shanghainese restaurants, Yè Shanghai offers a lighter version of braised Tianjin cabbage in cream sauce, catering to those who pursue a healthy lifestyle. The crispy roast chicken is, however, plain and dry. Dessert turns out to be a surprise; the ginger panna cotta with pommelo and candied orange has a strong and refreshing ginger flavour, while the black sesame in rice dumplings with wine and osmanthus is fragrant and delicious. The wine list offers a fine selection of red and white wines from around the world. Chinese wine and other beverages are also available.Staff are friendly, attentive and courteous, but the service can be a tad slow.Dinner for two costs about $550, excluding drinks.
