As the “grande dame” of Peranakan cuisine, Violet Oon’s Dempsey restaurant is a welcome addition to her culinary portfolio. Housed within a beautifully restored colonial building, the space embodies heritage elegance. The main dining room oozes character with its iconic hand-painted tiles and monochrome interior, while the alfresco tables offer a serene spot for a breezy lunch. The kerabu kacang botol is an essential starter. This wing bean salad is tossed with fresh herbs and a lively, spiced sauce that serves as a vibrant, savoury appetiser. For a lighter main, the assam nanas barramundi features sustainably farmed local fish, pan-roasted and adorned with a pineapple compote and ginger flower for a bright kaleidoscope of flavours.
