The Daily Grind Ampang

International   |   $ $ $ $   |   Ampang

This casual dining joint grinds out some of the best and most varied burger offerings in town.

SETTING

Situated in a quaint and prominent neighbourhood, the restaurant is easy to locate. The Daily Grind stands out amongst the rest of the establishments along the row, portraying itself to be a casual yet discreet neighbourhood burger joint. Its interior is warm and inviting, decked with wooden tables with high chairs at the outdoor area with a good view of the bar, and a slightly more refined setting in the main dining hall. Suitable for dates, family and casual group dinners.

FOOD

Commence the grinding with the crispy-skinned glazy Asian wings duo, featuring a half dozen Korean glazed and salted egg yolk wings. Next, the steak salad, which is deliciously described on the menu, is served exactly as it was described. The citrusy yet sweet mustard dressing complements the crisp lettuce, carrots, olives, cranberries with generous cuts of tender, medium-rare steak that emits an invigorating start to the main course.

The recommended lobster mac and cheese tastes better than it looks as every bite yields melt-in-the-mouth sensations of finely melted cheese together with al dente macaroni and generous, chunky lobster pieces. For beef lovers, the smothered steak is definitely worth trying. Though it’s not something one would order at a burger joint, the ribeye is nonetheless chargrilled to perfection, cooked medium rare, showered with thick mushroom sauce and complemented with sautéed potatoes and vegetables.

Top that with the foie gras burger. Undoubtedly the star burger of the place, it tastes as mouth-wateringly good as its presentation – sandwiched between crispy buttered buns is a perfectly cooked beef patty sporting a sweet and sourish aftertaste courtesy of the balsamic palm sugar glaze, and generously sized pan-seared foie gras laid over finely cut Portobello mushrooms. The homemade sweet potato crisps are a perfect complement.

Noteworthy sweet endings to try are the old-fashioned waffle that’s packed with fresh strawberries and cream, and the decadently rich banoffle – a waffle sandwich with coffee cream, caramelised bananas, peanut butter and cookie crumbs, decadently topped with chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream.

DRINKS

Wines by the glass or per bottle are reasonably priced here, with an adequate range of wines from Australia and Argentina as house pours and the remaining from Chile and Spain.

SERVICE

We were greeted immediately upon arrival, and escorted in to identify our reservation and then shown to our table. Wait staff were helpful in recommending dishes, although lacking in knowledge over the detailed ingredients and portions of dishes. Overall, service exceeded expectations; staff cleared and changed cutlery in time for the next course, and serving time was just right.

PRICE

The total bill of RM412 is reasonable for a party of three, as quality ingredients and generous portions feature among all the dishes. This restaurant is ideal for diners who would order to share, and can find great value in the burgers and mains.
