Prime

Steakhouse & Grill   |   $ $ $ $   |   Kuala Lumpur Sentral

Prime delights carnivores with an array of premium beef cuts, which are beautifully married with an outstanding range of wines.

One of the go-to favourites in town for satisfying steaks, Prime is a restaurant that delivers on all accounts when it comes to stylish dining. The spacious multi-levelled dining area and well-hidden corner tables for two ensure privacy is available if needed.

Prime’s pre-dinner serving of the breadbasket and butter certainly doesn’t disappoint, offering a yummy trilogy of butter selections – such the tom yam butter, a well-spiced, creamy in-house concoction – that complement the array of white and wholemeal bread.

The appetiser menu is peppered with choices such as fresh oysters, foie gras and lobster bisque alongside classic salads and soups. The seared scallops are presented in a circular arrangement around a centrepiece of poached egg on top of a bed of parmesan potatoes. The taste of the scallops is clean and pure but for a dose of rich flavour, the parmesan potatoes is a pleasant accompaniment.

A Wagyu beef is not just a Wagyu beef at Prime as patrons are spoilt for choice with the Australian-certified or Australian, prime rib or sirloin, oyster blade or filet mignon. First-timers can do no wrong with the Australian-certified Wagyu beef in marble 9 and above oyster blade steak. Another excellent choice is the Australian Black Angus – 200 days grain-fed filet mignon centre, which is best enjoyed cooked to medium perfection.

While the meats are best eaten without any sauces or sides, the sautéed spinach and truffle mashed potatoes are recommended for a more rounded flavour in the palate.

With its snazzy name – the fudgiest brownie ever – Prime’s specialty dessert is a crispy brownie with a heavenly moist centre, sprinkled with frosty sugar and served with a rich chocolate sauce.

Spanning 12 pages of New and Old World wines, Prime’s complete wine list is extensive as it is carefully curated under the Starwood Wines of the World selection. Befitting its purpose as a steakhouse, Prime’s red wine bottle selection is larger than its whites. Its house pours is only listed in one page but is well balanced in its choices that range from a common (sauvignon blanc) to the rare (Riesling).

Service is discreet and efficient, presented in a brisk pace that communicates adherance to quality standards. Interestingly, the staff sometimes provide answers even before guests  ask questions about the food and drink – clear indication that they are experienced and well-equipped to educate their diners.

RM350/Per person

Given the quality of the meal and good service, RM340 per head is a very reasonable price to pay, especially for special occasions. Sharing sides is an excellent way to enjoy more food while sharing the costs.
