This Hainanese kopitiam still serves the same chicken rice as it did 60 years ago

It’s near impossible to know how many outlets this Ipoh legend has nationwide, but Nam Heong’s Jalan Sultan branch remains our favourite; not only has the outlet retained its character over the years, but plus points must be given for its proximity to the Pasar Seni LRT station. Comfortably air-conditioned, the Hainanese kopitiam still serves the same chicken rice as it did 60 years ago. Whether you choose the silky poached chicken or the crispy roasted bird, both are the best examples in their respective categories. Pair your poultry or pork (neither too fatty nor lean, the BBQ pork and crispy roast porkare two bestsellers) with fragrant, fluffy rice cooked in chicken stock, perfumed by pandan leaves and glistening with margarine. Even Nam Heong’s sauces and garnishes, from the sweet-tangy chilli sauce to the slightly spicy pounded ginger paste, are made in-house.

TATLER TIP

Try the slightly chewy gizzards and rich chunks of liver if you’re a fan of innards.
