Thai Hou Sek
Petaling Jaya

You may have come across this neon-lit restaurant on the second floor of One Utama. While it may look like a restaurant that serves western food, Thai Hou Sek is famously known for its fusion of Thai-Chinese cuisine. Serving dishes that are inspired by the Thai gastronomy, diners are definitely spoilt for choice as they browse through the menu.
If you like a nibble before your meal, you should try the Mieang Kam, a traditional Thai snack, with pork lard crackles. Guests get to savour peanuts, vegetables, dried shrimps, coconut shavings and crispy pork fat all wrapped within a crunchy betel leaf. The aromatic and crunchy pork lard certainly kick starts your taste buds to dive into more tantalising dishes.
There are savoury dishes that must be sampled with a bowl of steaming white rice. First is the babi-Q pork neck, a scrumptious dish of succulent Thai-style braised pork shoulder served with a spicy and sweet sauce. It is a knock-out dish that leaves you craving for more. For those who enjoy eating their rice with curry, the pork and pumpkin green curry is a recommended dish, which has a lingering sweetness that suits everyone’s palate, especially children. Guests should also try the siu yuk tom yam. The spicy and sour soup enhances the taste of the roast pork and the dish is a lovely combination of both Thai and Chinese elements.
Pad kra pao, one of the most popular Thai foods, is also available at Thai Hou Sek. This dish comprising delicious, stir-fried minced pork with basil leaves and bird’s eye chilli, served with rice and a fried egg never fails to disappoint. The soft shell crab spicy fried rice is another delectable dish on the menu. Prepared with eggs, bird’s eye chillies and vegetables, topped with crispy deep-fried soft shell crab, this is a mouth-watering dish indeed.
A trip to Thai Hou Sek would not be complete without a serving of the signature dessert tab tim krob – crunchy Thai rubies, jackfruit and mango slices served with vanilla ice-cream and coconut milk. Also, don’t forget the signature drink, Thai Hou Yum, which is a delightful combination of jasmine tea, preserved plum and lime – very refreshing indeed!
