Chic and cheerful colonial Vietnamese meets Paris brasserie in Wan Chai’s Star Street area, serving rustic, finger-licking-good fare

Tatler Says

Prepare to get messy at Le Garcon Saigon, a charming Vietnamese brasserie in Wan Chai’s Star Street area. A section of the menu is devoted to DIY rice paper rolls, which all come with mounds of pickled cucumber, carrot, lettuce, Asian herbs and vermicelli noodles. Choose from tofu, beef, pork, or a whole yellowfin snapper, grilled in banana leaf with lemongrass chilli paste. The chilli is mild, but the fish benefits from being steamed in the wrapper and falls nicely off the bone. Starters such as fresh tiger prawns and salt and pepper chicken wings are also best eaten with your fingers, as is banh xeo, a crispy pancake stuffed with prawns, bean sprouts and more herbs. The stylish, tiered space, with its wicker chairs and murals, is part Parisian bistro and part colonial café. Wines are almost entirely French, with most bottles under HK$1,000. It’s a cheerful mid-priced restaurant popular with groups, who are well looked after by friendly wait staff.

Only set menus are available during weekday lunch, so go for dinner or on weekends to enjoy the full a la carte menu.
