Jija by Vicky Lau

Chinese   |   $ $ $ $   |   Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong

Chef Vicky Lau trades fine-dining precision for the vibrant spirit of southwest China, delivering Yunnan-inspired dishes that are rustic in soul but sharply refined in execution.

Located inside the Kimpton hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui, Jija reveals another side of Vicky Lau. Known for the precision of Tate Dining Room and the ingredient focus of Mora, Lau shifts gears here, embracing the lively, shareable cooking of Yunnan and southwest China. The mood is deliberately convivial; a modern teahouse energy where the food is bold, bright and designed for conversation. The menu draws heavily on the produce and flavours of the region: wild mushrooms, fragrant herbs and layered sour-spicy notes that define the cuisine. A seasonal mushroom salad celebrates Yunnan’s famed foraging culture, while pu’er tea-smoked Three Yellow chicken carries a gentle smokiness that lingers without overwhelming the bird. Even humble comforts like Yunnan pork-fat fried rice are elevated through balance and restraint. Despite the rustic inspiration, Lau’s fine-dining instincts remain evident: less oil and precise seasoning that keeps flavours vibrant rather than heavy.
