For top-notch Kowloon-side Shanghainese in a laidback, unexpectedly spacious setting

The far end of Gateway Arcade may seem like a trek for non-Kowloon-siders, but this beautifully decorated, wonderfully capacious space is worth it. While missing the view that might seem natural for a harbourside mall, the thoughtful, modern art touches go a significant way to making up for the lack of cityscape. The space stretches on far further than you might imagine, meaning you’re almost guaranteed a seat when your Northern Chinese cravings hit. Expect the usual menu suspects—the xiao long bao are thin-skinned and the soup just savoury enough—but don’t miss the slow-cooked, smoked chicken, with skin crisp enough to be heard cracking three tables away; or the melt-in-your-mouth river shrimp. And save space for dessert; there’s a great range of favourites.
