With a treasure chest-inspired box and a pairing of custard and red bean mooncakes, The Murray offers packaging designed to outlast the season

Mid-Autumn Festival is about reunion, and a box of mooncakes is still one of the best ways to mark the occasion. This year, The Murray, Hong Kong, has released its 2026 moonlit mooncake giftbox, and the real draw is what happens after the cakes are gone.

Most hotel mooncake boxes start to look the same after a while. The Murray has gone in a different direction, styling its giftbox like a treasure chest instead of the usual gift set. It makes sense for a hotel that occupies the historic Murray Building, a Foster + Partners restoration and one of Central’s most recognisable landmarks under the Hong Kong SAR Government’s Conserving Central initiative. That same attention to detail carries over to the box, which is designed to stick around.

Inside, six handcrafted mooncakes are split between two flavours. The deluxe creamy custard mooncake is rich and buttery, while the red bean paste mooncake with dried tangerine peel brings a citrus sharpness that balances the sweetness. It is a very Cantonese touch, and the two work well together for sharing rather than competing for attention.

Pricing encourages early orders. The giftbox retails at HK$498, or HK$424 with the early-bird discount for orders placed before August 31.

Corporate buyers can benefit from tiered rates: 150 boxes or more before 31 July drop to HK$299 each, 50 boxes or more before 31 August drop to HK$349, and 20 boxes or more before 18 September hold at HK$399.

Redemption runs from September 1 to 25, between 12pm and 8pm, at the concierge on the hotel’s lower ground floor. With limited stock and discount deadlines that reward planning ahead, it is worth securing orders early, especially for larger quantities.

Mid-Autumn gifting can often feel like a competition of who has the fanciest wrapper. The Murray’s approach flips that: the packaging becomes the gift itself, and the mooncakes are the bonus.
