Fairly new to the sushi scene in KL, Umai Sushikan opened as part of a star studded cast of restaurants from Japan at J's Gate Dining, Lot 10. Promising quality sushi in a casual ambiance, air-flown ingredients and a Japanese chef team, this is a restaurant that can offer an affordable yet quality sushi experience.

2. Ginza Sushimasa

One of the best spots in town for authentic sushi, straight from Tokyo, Ginza Sushimasa offers a premium omakase dining experience. The restaurant does offer an à la carte option, but its omakase option is where the restaurant really shines.

3. Sou Omakase

Situated at The Gardens, Sou Omakase offers a small 6-seater sushi counter for those inclined for the full experience. The restaurant features an eclectic assortment of Japanese foods, even introducing foreign ingredients to the cuisine to jazz things up. When it comes to sushi however, fans should get the course set.

4. Sushi Hibiki

Also another new kid on the block, Sushi Hibiki takes up residence in Four Seasons Place Kuala Lumpur, offering quality sushi with an ambiance befitting an intimate dinner. The chef, Makato Saito Sam, stays true to the techniques and sushi making disciplines he learned in Japan but isn't afraid to experiment and try new things that would suit the local market.

5. Fincch Sushi Room

Instead of going for a downtown vibe, Fincch Sushi Room opts for a neighbourhood locale over at Medan Damansara. Diners can expect fresh choices air-flown from Tsukiji market (which seems to be pre-requisite of quality sushi restaurants here in KL) that promises to offer gourmet level dining at affordable prices.

6. Sushi Azabu

After earning its Michelin star in New York, Sushi Azabu comes to KL at Isetan The Japan Store. The restaurant serves authentic Edomae style sushi, the predominant type of sushi served since the 1820's, which is the kind we all know and love today.

7. Taka By Sushi Saito

Sushi with a Michelin star pedigree, Taka by Sushi Saito is one of the the most premium restaurants on this list. Sushi master Takashi Saito makes "the best sushi in the world" and choose Kuala Lumpur as his maiden restaurant outside of Japan. The restaurant offers three omakase menus for lunch and one for dinner.

8. Sushi Hinata

Clean wooden and white elements pervade the atmosphere of this modern and elegant sushi establishment. Already creating a name for itself in town, Sushi Hinata is a favourite for many Japanese food lovers in the city, where live culinary artistry is part of the meal. Watch out for their reasonably priced lunch deals.

9. Wasabi Bistro

Californian-inspired Japanese cuisine is the name of the game at Wasabi Bistro, with a sushi boat to satisfy your cravings for the raw delicacy. However, the impressive looking sushi boat is only available Thursday and Fridays from 6pm to 10:30pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 12pm to 3pm. Although it primarily consists of sushi, you'll find other goodies to feed up to four persons.

10. Sushi Oribe

Anoter crowd pleaser, Sushi Oribe commands respect from sushi gourmands and chefs alike, thanks to a consistently quality experience throughout the years. This is in part due to their willingness to order fresh fish in for every day of the week to give diners the best possible experience. To top it all off, guests have 5 omakase menus to choose from.

11. Hanare

Helmed by two Japanese chefs, Hanare serves sushi from what you would expect out of a top notch sushi restaurant – imported ingredients, skilled cooks and a mostly positive response from those who have dined there. Located in The Intermark Mall, the restaurant gets bonus points for being near an MRT stop.

12. Kampachi Troika

One of KL's longstanding Japanese restaurants with a reputation for delivering consistently tasty Japanese food, Kampachi's flagship outlet at The Troika offers a kaiseki (traditional Japanese multi-course meal) focusing on just sushi, as well as an omakase course that offers a variety of Japanese food items should you crave for other food items to go along with your sushi choices.

13. Sushiya

Opening its doors two years ago at Plaza Mont Kiara, Sushiya (basically sushi shop in Japanese) is a quaint sushi restaurant run by a Japanese chef. Diners are welcome to order à la carte but the restaurant also offers set menus should you decide to leave your meal to the hands of the chef.

14. Tsukiji No 8

Relative newcomer to the downtown sushi scene, Tsukiji No 8 serves fish imported from the very market of which it gets its name from, so you can expect a high level of quality when it comes to the food here. The restaurant markets itself as a gourmet Japanese restaurant focusing on delivering an interesting blend of fine dining and molecular gastronomy.

15. Hanaya Japanese Dining

Taking up residence at Grand Millennium Kuala Lumpur, Hanaya goes the popular route of offering more than just sushi at the restaurant. With that being said, the restaurant does offer a sushi counter made of wood from a 350 year old Hinoki tree and two omakase courses that lean towards either a light version or the full course.

16. Kurata Japanese Fine Dining

Yet another high end restaurant located in a hotel, this time at Parkroyal Kuala Lumpur, Kurata specialises in omakase sushi, sashimi, sukiyaki, tempura and more. If you feel like enjoying sushi with other delicacies, you're free to do so but the restaurant also offers a sushi set that's reasonably priced.

17. Sushi Kinmedai

With an affordable 10 piece nigiri and aburi (roasted) sushi course, diners find the quality satisfactory for the price offered at Sushi Kinmedai over in Publika. However, its name may not necessarily reveal that the restaurant also features a wide range of non-sushi food items.

18. Bonus – Ichiro Sushi Bar

The next time you're craving sushi whilst shopping in 1 Utama, skip the sushi train type joints and head for this dedicated restaurant called Ichiro Sushi Bar situated on the second floor of Isetan. You may also be surprised to hear that this particular sushi restaurant has been around since 2012.
