Our annual guide to the region’s best fine dining restaurants hits bookstores and newsstands next week

As editor of this year’s Hong Kong Tatler’s Best Restaurants 2013, I’m pleased to announce that our annual guide with over 200 reviews of Hong Kong and Macau’s best restaurants, bars and cafes, will be in bookstores, newsstands and select gourmet grocery stores such as CitySuper and Great next week.

As a few of our readers may have already heard via Twitter, we’ve changed things up a bit this year. We sent out advanced copies to the restaurants and in his excitement, Chef Richard Ekkebus of Amber at the Landmark Mandarin Oriental instantly tweeted his pride that he was awarded our Best Chef of 2013. He’s not the only winner as we also gave out awards a total of 10 awards including Best New Chef (hint: an Australian chef who has taken up residence at a revamped restaurant in IFC); Best New Restaurant (in Macau, not Hong Kong) and Best Sommelier. The awardees were selected by not only our in-house team of writers and editors, but also canvassed from a select panel of our esteemed reviewers.

Even more exciting (and some may say controversial) is that we have also announced our Top 20 restaurants. These restaurants were deemed to be the cream of the crop of all the restaurants we reviewed this year and for the first time since 1984, we have ranked them from one to 20. In this new extended editorial section, we devoted double-page spreads to all 20 restaurants, giving our readers a sense of the restaurants’ hidining_stories, little-known facts, and just what it was that made them stand out above the rest.

Finally, bearing in mind that Christmas is just around the corner, we’ve even made a special limited-edition gift box version of the guide. Sponsored by Heather and March, a retailer that imports high-end French tableware to Hong Kong and China, this set includes not only our guide, but also a special set of cutlery, all wrapped up in a gift box that is just perfect for the festive season. There are only 140 of these box sets available, exclusively at Eslite bookstore in Hysan Place.
