More than 60 venues around Hong Kong are taking part in Coffee For Cats, where HK$5 is donated to Peta from every purchase of a dairy-free coffee

Plant-based milks are undoubtedly part of the mainstream now, with any cafe worth their salt offering at least one dairy alternative, whether it’s soy, oat or nut milks. The options are welcome among not only the lactose-intolerant, but those who choose not to consume animal products at all; not least Peta, the animal rights association best known for their eyebrow-raising publicity stunts and fervent campaigning to end the suffering of animals around the globe.

This October, the group are bringing back their Coffee For Cats campaign, in association with David Yeung’s Green Monday platform. The premise is simple—head to any of the participating cafes and restaurants between 23 and 30 October to order a plant-based Peta coffee and HK$5 will be donated to the organisation, to support their ongoing work. The venues have been tasked with creating their coffees using Barista Blend oat milk from Califia Farms, or other plant-based milk brands.

Among the list of 60-plus venues, these are our favourites for a great brew—check them out from Friday 23 October onwards, and see here for the full list of participating coffee spots.

Artista Perfetto, Causeway Bay

The tiny Causeway Bay coffee spot is one of our favourites for perfectly made espresso-based drinks—try their “Magic”, a smaller and more intense cup with thick, velvety microfoam.

Artista Perfetto, 3a Sharp Street West, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong

Elixir, Central

A relaxing spot above Gough Street in Central, where we’d usually kick back with an osmanthus cold brew tonic—but for sake of this campaign, we’d opt for their oat milk latte. Don’t forget to say hello to the cafe’s resident shorthair cat, Charlie.

Elixir, 9 Mee Lun Street, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong

Kind Kitchen, Central

The light and bright vegan-friendly spot is by Green Common, and is attached to their comprehensive grocery store selling plant-based provisions. We usually enjoy their plant-based Hong Kong-style milk tea and it’s worth sampling their Dalgona coffee, too.

Kind Kitchen, Shop 1, 1/F, Nan Fung Place, 173 Des Voeux Road Central, Central, Hong Kong

Lazy Creatures, Kowloon City

This pet-friendly bakery-cafe in Kowloon City is a great spot for breads, pies and expertly made coffees with picture-perfect latte art.

Lazy Creatures, Katherine Building, Shop J, G/F, 379 Prince Edward Road West, Kowloon City, Hong Kong

Tai Wo Tang, Kowloon City

You may know this highly Instagrammable Kowloon City cafe that’s housed in a former traditional Chinese medicine shop—come here for what ails you, because their coffee is spot on.

Tai Wo Tang, 24 Nga Tsin Long Road, Kowloon City, Hong Kong

Friends Of Years, Tsuen Wan

All of the branches of vegan cafe Years are on the Coffee For Cats list, including the original Years and The Park by Years, but their Tsuen Wan outlet is one of our favourites.

Friends Of Years, 20 Sam Pei Square, Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong
