Packed with iron and fibre, Fazer’s new ‘Taste the Future’ chocolate bar is pushing the boundaries of food technology
What if we told you that a chocolate bar represents everything new and exciting in the food industry? On January 19, Fazer, the leading food experience company in Finland, launched a limited edition “Taste the Future” chocolate bar sold exclusively at The Cocoa Trees stores. Its secret? Solein, a protein powder “made out of thin air” that launched in Singapore last May, making this chocolate bar the first retail product that consumers can taste Solein in.
Far from being unhealthy, this dark chocolate bar studded with strawberries, hazelnuts and fibre-rich oat puffs gets an iron and protein boost with Solein. The protein powder, created by Finnish food tech company Solar Foods, is made by feeding microbes with oxygen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide and mineral nutrients, which produces carbohydrates, vitamins, amino acids, and lipids before being dried into powder form.

As Solar Foods’s biggest shareholder, Fazer has been working closely with Solar Foods’s research and development team, in line with its commitment to creating products that are completely sustainably-sourced. The launch of the chocolate bar will also act as a trial for upcoming market rollouts when production is fully ramped up, especially when Solar Foods completes its Factory 01 later this year.
It is fitting that the chocolate bar should launch in Singapore—the only country in the world which has given Solein regulatory approval—which is hoping to produce 30 per cent of its food on its shores by 2030. Calling Singapore the “perfect test ground” for the chocolate bar, Heli Anttila, the vice-president of new product development at Fazer Confectionary, lauded the country’s “highly innovative food ecosystem and people who are not only passionate about food, but curious to try new things that are new”.

As for Solar Foods, its CEO Pasi Vainikka said that the chocolate bar “demonstrates the potential of Solein as a sustainable and nutritious fortifier”, and hopes to receive “valuable customer feedback on Solein's viability in a new product category” and “a sense of the consumer acceptance of future ingredients”, before a “wider-scale European launch in 2025–2026”.
