The formidable wine cellar from the legendary Spanish restaurant is to be auctioned off at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong next April
If you’ve ever wondered what happened to all the wine when Ferran Adrià’s famed El Bulli closed back in 2011, you’re not alone. The sensational collection of unique and rare wines, carefully curated by Juli Soler and the restaurant’s large team of sommeliers, will be auctioned by Sotheby’s next year only in Hong Kong and New York. The first auction in Hong Kong will take place on April 3, 2013, followed by the New York auction on April 26, 2013.
Over the course of the two auctions, the total value of the 8,800 odd bottles is estimated to be around the region of US$1.1-$1.6 million. The large-scale auction will feature a huge number of highlights oenophiles should not miss out on. Over 2,000 Spanish bottles valued at over US$200,000-$300,000 will be available, including nearly 100 bottles and six vintages of Vega Sicilia “Unico” between 1987 and 1996. Notable bottles from Rhone, Bordeaux, and Burgundy are also on the list. One of the biggest highlights, however, must be the three bottles of Domaine de la Romanée Conti, Romanée Conti 1990, with an estimated value of US$32,500-$47,500.
Proceeds from the sale will go towards benefiting the El Bulli Foundation, Adrià’s educational centre focusing on the process of creativity and innovation.
