Indulge in classic creations like injeolmi, mango and strawberry or if you prefer local flavours, try the Milo bingsu which comes dressed in Milo powder and cereal. Look out for other sweet treats such as hotteok, a crisp and sweet Korean pancake filled with brown sugar syrup.

3. Yat Ka Yan Dessert

This popular dessert joint has opened its latest outlet in Bugis, much to the delight of its fans in Singapore. Here, traditional and innovative Chinese desserts are available. Try the joint’s unique rendition of chendol, which sees the well-loved shaved ice dessert crowned with creamy yam paste. Durian fans can opt for the durian chendol, which comes topped with the rich and creamy fruit. Those who prefer classic flavours should try their chewy tang yuan in fragrant ginger soup.

4. Ah Chew Dessert

If you need a recommendation for good, old-fashioned Chinese dessert shops, Ah Chew Dessert is where you want to go. At night, you’ll always find long crowds snaking across Liang Seah Street vying for a dessert at this tiny shophouse, which boasts traditional, beautifully designed wooden chairs and tables and calligraphy hanging on the walls. The mango pomelo sago (which can be updated with durian) is classic here, deliciously thick yet refreshing to beat the heat, but the hot desserts are equally rejuvenating as well. The black sesame paste, for instance, is fabulously nutty and worth staining your teeth for, as is the orh nee (yam paste) with ginkgo nut, which you’ll love for its earthy and creamy texture.

5. Dessert First

At Dessert First, you’ll find bold, new desserts rubbing shoulders with traditional ones, which makes this the perfect spot for the family to gather after a hearty meal. The shaved ice desserts here are stunning; the durian version, in particular, sees a mountain of shaved ice drizzled in durian sauce and then topped with a decadent durian ice cream. Homemade waffles and ice cream are available here too, like an indulgent vanilla ice cream drizzled with salted caramel while the bananas add a burnt, complex, and fruity sweetness to the dessert. Lest you forget the traditional offerings, go for silky-smooth desserts like the double-boiled papaya with white fungus and almonds which will calm your stomach.

6. Ice Lab

Hop on the Korean bingsu craze at Ice Lab, a trendy café located in Bugis Village. Treat yourself to bingsu topped with injeolmi, a Korean rice cake tossed in a dried soy bean powder for a nutty contrast to the sweetened shaved ice. The matcha bingsu is a popular choice, as are fruitier options like the mango or watermelon bingsu. It’s hard to miss Smile Dessert on its corner on North Bridge Road. The millefeuille durian cake is a must-try for durian lovers, and if you’re a fan of tiramisu, the taro tiramisu is a good choice, enhanced as it is by the thick earthiness of the taro. A popular offering is the chendol bingsu, a local twist on the Korean shaved ice dessert that brings the best of chendol’s complex palm sugar taste with the smoothness of bingsu. Durian is a must here, so make sure to order the durian sago served with an extra powerful dollop of durian paste to enhance your dessert experience. And in case you were looking for something more warm and comforting, go for traditional desserts like the tang yuan filled with either black sesame paste, peanut paste, or egg custard.
