The popular central food hall calls on the city’s bakers to compete with their signature bakes

American Thanksgiving is only two weeks away, and Central’s Basehall is set to kick off its first Thanksgiving celebration. On 20 and 21 November, the food hall will showcase its first Thanksgiving menu with offerings from all of Basehall's dining outlets. On 21 November, Basehall will host its inaugural bake-off event and bake sale to raise funds for Hong Kong charity The ChickenSoup Foundation.

Basehall’s own bake-off is inspired by The BBC television hit reality television programme “The Great British Bake Off”, where each week contestants compete in a signature challenge with tried-and-true recipes, followed by a technical challenge where they bake a surprise item with blind judging; and finally a show-stopper challenge where the contestants showcase their talents and flair for flavour combinations and finesse in presentation. The show has been a critical success since its debut in 2010, and is in its 11th season—not to mention its numerous spin-offs based in other countries including The United States, Spain, Israel, South Africa, and New Zealand.

Basehall’s inaugural bake-off event calls on the city’s most skilled and creative bakers to enter a friendly competition where the baked goods will be judged for their creativity, taste, and presentation. The final judging will take place at the Central food hall at 2:00 pm on 21 November. The baked goods will be judged by a three-person panel which includes Tom Andrews of Basehall, Wil Fang of Cookie DPT, and myself, Wilson Fok—senior dining editor at Tatler Hong Kong. The winner of inaugural bake-off competition will receive a one-week collaboration opportunity with Basehall, as well as a one-week marketing promotion on the social media and marketing platforms of Cookie DPT and Basehall.

Bakers interested in taking part in the competition can submit to the Basehall team a photo of their baked good, its description, and a few lines about their inspiration and why they enjoy baking. The email with photo attachment should be sent to the Basehall team on or before Thursday, 19th November. Baked goods will be judged through a preliminary judging process and finalists will be contacted individually to present at the final event on Saturday, 21st November by 2:00 pm. All baked goods at the final event will be sold at a charity bake sale which raises funds for The ChickenSoup Foundation. At the same time, Basehall’s 10 dining outlets will also launch a special Thanksgiving-inspired menu, available at the food hall on 20 and 21 November only. All profits gained from the two days, including proceeds from the bake sale, will be donated to The ChickenSoup Foundation which provides relief and education to underprivileged families by offering hot meals, hygiene services, medical care, mental relief services and educational programmes.

The inaugural bake-off event is an excellent opportunity to enjoy a fun weekend of baking and sharing good food. Channel your inner star baker and craft your best show stopping signature bakes for a good cause.
