The new cocktail bar will offer 30 seats only and a unique rotating bar station
In a city as vibrant as Hong Kong, silence is usually brief—a pause between beats. Yet, for an enduring period of three years, Hong Kong experienced stillness, uncertainty and enforced restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite all this, a certain resilience thrummed beneath. Now, amid the city's slow but steadfast recovery, Indonesian bar veterans Agung and Laura Prabowo pay tribute to this time and Hong Kong's unyielding resolve with the opening of Lockdown, a new cocktail bar that will open on Hollywood Road in early September.
Drawing parallels to Prohibition, a ban on alcoholic beverages in the United States that lasted from 1920 to 1933, the bar will celebrate the spirit of resistance and offer an intimate, speakeasy-inspired space for only thirty guests at any given time. Taking over the old Check-in Taipei spot in Central, the bar’s aesthetics will also reflect this era with modern Asian touches and a rotating bar station, conceptualised by Agung Prabowo himself, inside. The unassuming entrance, in keeping with the theme, will sit discreetly next to a “toilet” sign—a symbol of the not-so-pleasant tribulations faced in Hong Kong—on Hollywood Road.
The Prabowos, who are also behind Penicillin, which ranked #26 on Asia’s 50 Best Bars in 2023 and is one of Tatler Dining's top 10 bars in Hong Kong, and Lan Kwai Fong's dive bar Dead&, have formulated a bar menu that will feature 25 cocktails, priced at HK$100, that come under three different categories: Experimental, Vintage and Remastered, made using the latest technology and trends in mixology, as well as tools that are more commonly seen in labs, including a rotary evaporator and masticator machine. Meanwhile, the food menu will be inspired by indigenous Asian cuisine and traditions, offering sharing plates to enjoy at the bar with friends.
