A unique wine pays an elegant tribute to its creator and the Rothschild family legacy

A triumphant manifestation of the winemaker’s art, Baronesa P. is a unique wine that combines the prestigious expertise of Baron Philippe de Rothschild and the finest micro-terroirs of Chile. Named for a scion of the distinguished family, the wine celebrates Baroness Philippine de Rothschild’s pioneering spirit and belief in the potential of the Chilean terroir.

Born in Chile’s Maipo Valley, Baronesa P. is the product of years of expert understanding of the local soils and vineyards, technological innovations and extensive refinements. The cuvée is composed of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and syrah grapes grown in well-balanced alluvial soils and a Mediterranean climate influenced by nightly gusts of cold air originating from the Andes. These are paired with carménère and petit verdot grapes grown in slightly warmer vineyards to optimal ripeness. During the winemaking process, Baronesa P. 2020 was aged for 18 months in a combination of new and used French oak barrels, adding complexity from tertiary notes.

The result is a deep ruby-red wine with an intense nose and elegantly complex palate, with notes of blackberry, blackcurrant and black cherry, along with hints of black pepper, roasted almonds, mocha and vanilla from the barrel-ageing process. The well-balanced, long-lasting finish features black fruit aromas with hints of spices and roasted hazelnut, suggesting excellent ageing potential. A testament to its unique expressions and exquisite quality, Baronesa P. has received multiple accolades from the wine world’s most prestigious arbiters, including 97 points from James Suckling, with a ranking of ninth place in his Top 100 Wines of Chile, and 95 points from Descorchados, South America’s leading wine guide.

Baronesa P. is the most prestigious wine created by the Escudo Rojo estate. For years, the Baroness had been drawn to the possibility of creating high-quality wines to her exacting specifications in Chile, which features vine-nurturing soil conditions, and a varied topography and climate suitable for growing French grape varieties. Based at the 60-hectare Viña Baron Philippe de Rothschild Chile in the Maipo Valley, she created Escudo Rojo in 1999.

Decades later, Escudo Rojo is renowned for elevating the expression of the Chilean terroir with Baron Philippe de Rothschild’s distinctive approach to winemaking. Alongside Baronesa P., the winery produces the flamboyant yet refined Escudo Rojo Gran Reserva, the award-winning 100 per cent cabernet sauvignon Escudo Rojo Origine, and the Escudo Rojo Reserva range of wines featuring French and Chilean grape varieties across six expressions: chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, syrah, pinot noir, carménère and cabernet sauvignon.

To create Escudo Rojo, the Baroness adopted the Spanish translation of her family name, “rote schild”, which means “red shield”. In giving her family’s name to her Chilean venture, the Baroness marked Escudo Rojo as a worthy expansion of the Rothschild legacy.
