Gourmands would agree that the best way to welcome Singapore's 54th birthday is with a lavish feast deserving of our culinary roots. Thankfully, chefs have stepped up to the plate to give us diverse offerings that range from Chinese, Peranakan to Indian.
The Clifford Pier
Want to get the best views of the National Day fireworks while feasting on delectable food? Then park yourself at this restaurant and partake in all the sumptuous specials, available on August 9. Start early with the dim sum high tea (11am-1pm) where you can savour the likes of freshly made steamed char siew pau and siew mai with crab roe. Stay until the seafood buffet (6pm-10pm), an even bigger spread that comes with optional beverages including wines, beers and juices.
Ellenborough Market Café
Peranakan fare is always on top of our list for important moments like Singapore’s 54th. You know you’ll be spoilt for choice here, thanks to an extensive table of Peranakan hits including DIY kueh pie tee; ayam buah keluak most notable for its spicy tamarind gravy; and Nyonya chap chye. Of course, these serve as complements to the extensive spread that includes all-time favourites like roast chicken rice, laksa and the peppery Teochew style bak kut teh. Available throughout the month of August.
While you won’t get front-row seats of the pyrotechnics display come August 9, you’ll be able to catch the show on the large flat-screen TVs at the restaurant, as you tuck into executive chef Leong Chee Yeng’s lip-smacking set dinner (6.30pm to 10.30pm). Highlights include roasted crispy chicken marinated with Hua Diao wine and spiced salt; wok-fried five-grain glutinous rice with Chinese sausage and steamed Chilean sea bass with seasonal vegetables.
The Lighthouse Restaurant & Bar
Opt for a romantic restaurant if you’re planning to spend National Day with your loved one. And honestly, you can’t get any better than this stalwart perched atop The Fullerton Hotel Singapore. Majestic vista aside, you get to enjoy chef Carlo Marengoni’s five-course dinner (6.30pm to 10.30pm) of rustic Italian eats brimming with delicious flavours—served with a glass of sparkling wine.
Chinese cuisine is such a big part of Singapore’s culinary heritage that it seems about right to feast on its delicious offerings. This stalwart ensures you can, thanks to a lavish set menu comprising of luxe dishes such as golden fish maw broth bobbing with silken chicken; honey glazed kurobuta pork drenched in an aromatic truffle sauce; and silky golden fried noodles generously tossed with plump fresh prawns. Available throughout the month of August.
Those with a sweet tooth would love the brasserie’s National Day promotion. It starts with a three-course menu. Each one has three options; the starter is a choice between a refreshing escabeche, studded with red snapper, scallops and octopus in a zesty cider vinaigrette, and a more indulgent cold angel hair pasta crowned with uni cream, sakura and ikura. Whatever main you choose—whether it’s the linguini vongole or cepe scented roasted angus tenderloin—both are winners. Dessert is served buffet style, so have as many gula melaka, pandan chiffon and lemon tarts as you can.
