Our picks include unique dishes conceived exclusively for lockdown and mouthwatering pantry staples

The difference is palpable: Malaysians are getting better at lockdown. While the first Movement Control Order (MCO) in March 2020 saw a mad scramble to pivot from dine-in to delivery, restaurants kept their cool when Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced another lockdown on Monday, January 11, 2021. Some even released their delivery menus and information that very day itself. Proving that it is possible to satiate your culinary curiosity in the safety of home, these restaurants and cafés in the Klang Valley and Penang are keeping their delivery game strong.

KLANG VALLEY: Herbed Rice Bowls by Gooddam

Listed in the Tatler Dining Guide for two consecutive years (2020 and 2021), Gooddam is no stranger to comfort food; in one word, 'carbs'. While the sourdough always rises at Gooddam and fresh pasta is made in-house, the restaurant rarely features rice dishes, making their delivery menu all the more exciting. Peruse their new D'Italiano Dons topped with spice-glazed duck, torched mackerel or grilled MB8 Wagyu, and definitely opt for the upgrade to truffle butter rice. Each rice bowl comes with an jiggly onsen egg.

KLANG VALLEY: Meaty mains by Soon Heng Social Club

On any other day, you'd have to secure reservations to this secret supper club to sample their dishes. One of the silver linings to lockdown is that Soon Heng Social Club now delivers. Tuck into their signature lamb chop with mint basil pesto or steaks served with a side salad and parmesan cayenne potato wedges. For fans of spice, there are Thai-inspired chicken wings and fried oyster mushrooms with Szechuan pepper salt.

KLANG VALLEY: Pastries and desserts by Xiao By Crustz

Last year's lockdown was made more bearable when we ordered some sweet treats from Xiao by Crustz—delivered by the pastry chef's parents, no less. In anticipation of Chinese New Year, the family-run business is already featuring a Koi-shaped petit gâteau on their menu, but it's the pastry box that we have our eye on, as we'll be able to make it stretch longer; contents vary from week to week, but may include the likes of croissants, madeleines, pain au chocolat, danishes, scones and quiches.

Our readers based in the Pearl of the Orient will be pleased to know that casual fine dining is still an option during MCO. Restaurant Au Jardin's kitchen is still up and running and they're turning out 'unorthodox tapas' such as Croquettas of Pickled Crab, White Wine and Curry; Black Truffle Pain Perdu; and Abalone and Lobster Risotto. "Apart from the hay-aged duck, the rest of our dishes are pretty much new," comments head chef Kim Hock Su.

Just as exciting is Au Jardin's provisions menu, which provides the perfect opportunity to stock up your pantry with quality ingredients. Think artisanal homemade butter, tinned caviar, wholesome dips, and the restaurant's iconic dosa-inspired bread.

PENANG: French pasta by Communal Table by Gen

After experimenting with a few 'cook it yourself' delivery kits, we've found the results to be exceptionally pleasing. After all, some dishes are meant to be eaten à la minute, and pasta is one of them. We're glad that Communal Table by Gen is of the same mind; the modern Malaysian eatery recently rolled out fresh pasta kits with five different types of sauces, the meatballs and marinara option being head chef Kevin Ng's favourite. We recommend adding a whole loaf of housemade Benggali bread to your order—all the better for sopping up every last bit of sauce.

TATLER TIP: To make the perfect pasta, Chef Ng advises giving your pasta a good stir while it's boiling in salted water; this step will prevent individual strands from sticking to each other.
