Club Rangoon Launches Breathe For Burma Appeal

Hit by twin misfortunes of a military coup and a worsening third wave of Covid, Myanmar's plight has been intensifying as a fractured medical infrastructure struggles to deal with a shortage of oxygen and hospital beds. In a bid to alleviate the crisis developing in Myanmar, Burmese restaurant Club Rangoon is appealing to diners to participate in its Breathe for Burma fundraising campaign, held in partnership with the Burmese Chinese Medical Centre (BCMC).

Every Tuesday, the restaurant will be donating 30 percent of its profits for the day to a fundraiser on Give.asia, with the goal of raising HK$200,000, or enough for BCMC to purchase 200 40-litre oxygen tanks to distribute to those in need in Myanmar. One 40-litre tank is capable of sustaining a patient with severe Covid symptoms for 4-5 hours, or up to one day for those with mild symptoms. Donate to the cause now by clicking here.

Fans of sports and shellfish will want to pay this new Lan Kwai Fong opening a visit. The self-described "hybrid sports bar and restaurant" takes over the former 4,000 sq. ft Beef & Liberty space in California Tower, and features 11 large 4K HD TVs for the best live-streaming experience. The menu is predictably centred around mussels with ten worldly broths to choose from, including Singaporean laksa, chilli crab, and Italian formaggi varieties. These are served with baguette bread, fries, or deep-fried mantou buns to soak up the flavours.

The rest of the menu is similarly global in focus, with crowd-pleasers like deep-fried Angus beef steak, baby back ribs, seafood platters and lobster buns on offer. Diners can wash this all down with the restaurant's expansive wine and beer menu, with a happy hour that spans 3pm to 7pm seven days a week.

Sprouting from the rich soils of Yunnan during the rainy season at this time of year is a cornucopia of wild mushrooms found only in the uniquely biodiverse climes of this southwestern Chinese province. Fungi lovers can get a taste of this year's harvest at The Legacy House and Chilli Fagara, where regular deliveries of some of Yunnan's 1,000 mushroom varieties ensure the optimal freshness of this unique delicacy.

At The Legacy House, chef Li Chi-wai is now serving eight seasonal mushroom dishes until the end of September, including braised morels in chicken broth, termite mushrooms poached in pork broth with hokkigai clams, and swollen stalked cat mushrooms stir-fried with wagyu beef. The centrepiece double-boiled winter melon soup is particularly nourishing thanks to the use of Chanterelle, matsutake, and termite mushrooms.

Meanwhile at Chilli Fagara, chef Chan Kai-ying infuses her Sichuanese flair into dishes like a spicy broth of lion's mane, Chanterelle and porcini mushrooms, plump fried cuttlefish stuffed with morels, and bamboo pith and chicken slices with tea tree mushrooms.
