Cover Crême brulée with caramelized sugar

Documentation of the dessert first appeared in François Massialot's 1691 cookbook titled 'Cuisinier Royal et Bourgeois'. Flash forward to 2019: here are our favourite places to order the decadent French treat

1. 2OX

Indulge in a gastronomic afternoon tea at 2OX, a chic French restaurant on Jalan Doraisamy aka Asian Heritage Row. The spread includes a classic crème brûlée infused with vanilla bean plus other baked goods such as lemon madeleines and delicious dark chocolate tarts. Customers can also order the crème brûlée independent of afternoon tea—simply tack it on to your à la carte lunch or dinner.

2. Soleil

Chef Evert Onderbeke excels at all the classic French offerings, but often thinks out of the box when it comes to crème brûlée. The previous version with Speculoos and Lotus Biscoff crumbs was a big hit, and the current one served with soursop sorbet is equally playful and refreshing.

3. Entier French Dining

Entier French Dining, one of our favourite French restaurants in town, puts a tropical spin on the ramekin dessert by adding house-made mango sorbet, fresh cubed mangoes, and hazelnuts. Chef Masashi Horiuchi's desserts, from the dark chocolate soufflé to the coconut and passionfruit mousse, always incorporate fresh ingredients of top quality.

4. Chocha Foodstore

Inspired by our Malaysian roots, Chocha Foodstore concocted their ulam raja crème brûlée using dehydrated ulam raja powder, Thai basil and homemade honeycomb. This unique crème brûlée's earthy flavours make it easy to keep reaching out for another scoop.

The pistachio crème brûlée at Serai, a contemporary Malaysian café, is more than just presentable. Served with vanilla ice cream, the rich dessert is deliciously nutty and has just the right degree of sweetness.

6. Yeast Bistronomy

This casual bistro dishes out a flawless crème brûlée infused with vanilla beans. To us, the perfect spoonful consists of equal parts crunchy torched sugar and silken custard. We're fans of Yeast's original branch in Bangsar.
