The One-Michelin Star Australian restaurant will be shuttering its doors for the final time this month

After an illustrious five and a half years, Cheek Bistro has decided to call it quits. The contemporary Australian restaurant first opened its doors in March 2019, and was helmed by chef-owner Rishi Naleendra, his wife Manuela Toniolo and restaurant manager Muhaimen. Known for its eclectic executions and relentless testing of modern culinary boundaries, the bistro was well-loved for its unconventional and light-hearted approach to quality cuisine. Chef Rishi's second venture after his one-Michelin-starred Cheek by Jowl, Cheek Bistro was brazenly marketed as its predecessor's playful younger sibling.

Born into a family of food professionals, Rishi's instinctive flair for dissecting ingredients and techniques gifted the restaurant with game-changing modern Australian fare that married the fresh, quirky flavours from the land Down Under with the comforting, hearty notes of bistro cooking. Artfully plated in a minimalistic and rustic fashion that mirrored the bistro’s interior, the Cheek brunch and dine in menu proved to be more than just food, but an exhilarating visual and culinary experience altogether.

More than a means of livelihood, the restaurant marked a significant and inspirational milestone in Rishi's career. Cheek by Jowl received its first coveted star on Michelin Guide Singapore in 2017, a mere year after its opening, making Rishi the first Sri Lankan chef ever to attain Michelin status. Not long after, Cheek Bistro went on to receive one Michelin star in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

While many of us will no doubt feel the loss of Cheek, we can be comforted by the knowledge that this will not be the end of Rishi's ventures. He assures us, “There are plans in the pipeline to retain the space and open a brand-new concept sometime this year. We can’t wait to share more of our unique hospitality and create more memorable experiences for everyone.”

We look forward to the bistro’s rebirth and await the next concept hidden up Chef Rishi’s sleeve. In the meantime, fans can still grab a final taste of Cheek Bistro, available till August 15 via takeaway and delivery on Oddle or GrabFood.
