Make his day extra special by surprising him with a meal specially crafted for the occasion

You know what they say, the best way to a man’s heart—in this case, dad—is through his stomach. In fact, we know some can be rather discerning when it's time to tuck in. Which is why this Father’s Day (June 16), it’s always a good idea to surprise him with a delicious and memorable meal. Fret not if you're short on ideas to treat him right. Here are a few we know he'll dig.

1. Treat him to a sumptuous Peranakan brunch

On June 16, dad's meal starts with a complimentary double-boiled soup with abalone, scallop, mushroom, sea cucumber and chicken to whet the appetite.

Then, he can continue with Peranakan gems this buffet is known for—from the ubiquitous kueh pie tee, ayam buah keluak, babi pongteh and nyonya chap chye, to more richly savoury delights like beef rendang, masala lamb chop and coffee pork ribs.

And that’s just for lunch. Dinner is more expansive, with the highlight being succulent Sri Lankan crabs prepared in different, delectable ways. Familiar favourites include the black pepper crab, flower crab in a Thai yellow curry, salted egg crab and braised crab with bee hoon.

2. Celebrate with a romantic steak dinner

Surprise dad and mum with a romantic date night; chef Ryohei Kenyoshi has the ideal seven-course dinner, available from June 10 to 15.

It starts with a zesty smoked red salmon snapper and tuna drizzled with ginger calamansi sauce, followed by foie gras and girolle pan-seared in butter and served with white port wine and orange sauce. No doubt, they’ll be equally delighted with their choice of mains such as chargrilled lobster and 21-days dry-aged ocean beef ribeye, skillfully cooked over binchotan.

The latter even comes with their choice of Japanese-inspired cocktails: Sparkling Sake “Shishi no Sato Sen”; whisky-based concoctions like the Samurai Caipiros “Chita” and  Burnt Cinnamon Manhattan; gin-spiked Fizzy Melon Crush; and a frozen sake cocktail.

3. Bond over a cold one and small bites

Dad would surely love an ice cold beer, and there’s no place more ideal than this bar and lounge at Sofitel Singapore City Centre to have one with him. In fact, the team has worked with local brewery Trouble Brewing to create their own invigorating craft beers.

From June 10 to 16, order him the Crocodile Sunset Summer Ale, Banana Sunday Session IPA, and Tropicana Botanical Pilsner at a very special price. They're available for dine-in or takeaway, but if he chooses the former, he'll also get to enjoy complimentary bar bites.

4. Indulge his appetite for modern Chinese fare

There are two options here: the enhanced weekend brunch on June 15 and 16, and a delectable five-course set menu that's available throughout the month. Pick the former and join dad in tucking into over 50 dim sum dishes, roasts, soups as well as specially curated dishes, including the steamed bamboo clam topped with pork sausage; soya milk congee with lobster chunks and minced pork; and stir-fried abalone with asparagus in a punchy X.O. sauce.

The five-course menu has standouts, too, such as radish stuffed with dried scallop, king oyster mushroom and sea cucumber, as well as fried rice with preserved fish.

5. Surprise him with brunch and a view

The Father’s Day feast is a family affair after all, so get everyone together for this expansive weekend brunch, on June 15 and 16, that also boasts a gorgeous view. The spread is a mix of small plates of slow-cooked beef, beef sliders, snapper pie and classic lobster bisque, among others, to share. It also comes with free-flow soft drinks and juices, but dads get a bonus of bottomless draft beers from 12pm to 4pm just for being—well, dad.

6. Take him on a gastronomic journey through India

Indian fare is renowned for its vibrant flavours, so even a no-fuss meal at a fine restaurant will impress. Just you and dad? Opt for the set for two, comprising mushroom soup or dahi puri to start. Pace yourself as mains include hearty items like murgh musallam, dal makhani and a basket of plain naans to soak up all the goodness.

If you're planning to make it a party, the set for four has additional dishes, such as papdi chaat, lamb shank biryani and garlic naan. Both sets, non-alcoholic drinks included, are available from until June 16.

7. Kick the weekend off with an authentic Italian feast

Looking to get an early start? One of the best places to do this is at Zafferano’s terrace lounge, with views of CBD skyline. The culinary team has prepared the perfect indulgence designed for two guests on June 14 and 15 (5.30pm and 6.30pm, respectively).

On the menu are burratina, pizza topped with fresh burrata, olives and basil, and cooked in the restaurant's stone oven, and crisp and aromatic truffle French fries to snack on throughout the night. Completing this fuss-free treat is a bottle of house wine or a bucket of five bottles of Peroni beer.

8. Trust in classic north Indian winners

Dad surely won’t be able to resist a trip back to this stalwart for its featured Father’s Day spread, on June 16 (12pm to 2.30pm). It’s an extensive buffet line-up of vegetarian and non-vegetarian specials.

The meat-free spread includes mushrooms marinated in spices and grilled in the tandoor, Hyderabadi brinjal curry, and daal makhani (slow-cooked black lentils stew).

At the other end are delights such as saag gosht, essentially lamb cooked with fresh spinach and Indian spices, murgh makhani, which is always a crowd favourite along with the chicken tikka, cooked in a creamy smoked tomato sauce.

9. Make it a casual night out at an izakaya

Truth be told, dads also crave some time out with the boys, best paired with charcoal-grilled dishes and lots of sake. For its Father’s Day promotion, available until June 16, every three orders of skewers (two sticks each plate) gets him a fourth plate on the house. To redeem this promotion, remind him to mention “Tatler” before ordering.

Dad gets to choose from 60 items ranging from meat, poultry to seafood. Highlights include grilled Kagoshima ribeye beef, shiitake mushrooms, Japanese mackerel with plum, and ox tongue—if dad wants to indulge his adventurous foodie side.

10. Take the family on a gastronomic escape

It's the quickest trip for a celebration away from the maddening crowd. Dad can still tuck into a bountiful spread spanning eastern and western fare, with the likes of Thai-style grilled king prawns, and local favourites like chilli crab and black pepper char kway teow, as well as Italian fare, including his favourite starter of burrata with roma tomatoes and fresh basil.

Even the little ones get their own activity corner, where they can watch cartoon screenings or even create their own Father’s Day card. They also get to snack on cheese sticks and chicken nuggets, and wash it down with their preferred fruit juice. Just for the Father’s Day brunch, available on June 16, dad dines for free with every party of four.

11. Treat him to a modern European repast

You can do so with this four-course lunch set, available on June 16, that starts with the quintessential foie gras, lightly pan-seared and served with braised turnips, lotus root chips and cherries.

The pasta dishes here are a must-try, and the highlight for the occasion is the egg tagliolini in a piquant onion sauce with rosemary and topped with lots of parmigiano. The main course is a serving of black angus short ribs cooked with carrot, celery and white pepper.

Dads with a sweet tooth will especially love the chocolate soufflé, served with a side of strawberry salad and yoghurt sorbet, to finish.
