Akar Dining's takeaway/delivery Cadeaux de France's Menu For 2 is based on the tastes of Lyon, France

The restaurant is taking diners to exciting locations around the world

A sentimental tune wafts through the air. It's Edith Piaf’s La Vie En Rose. I take another mouthful of fish mousse, savouring its smooth texture on my tongue. A glass of wine sits beside my plate, half drunk. I ask my partner to pass the foie gras.

It’s another lockdown dinner in my apartment in Kuala Lumpur. But in my mind, I am in a charming little café in Lyon, France.

That's the effect of Akar’s Dining Cadeaux De France: Menu For 2, part of their new hommage menu. Their new takeaway/ delivery menu has a a travel theme, changing from one location to the next every two weeks.

“We hope to bring dinners on a journey,"explains Akar Dining chef Aidan Low. "Our nature as chefs has always been about giving. With movement restrictions in place for over a year, we hope that our food and the experiences that we provide will be able to transport you to certain locations. In a way, it also gives us a certain relief in what we can offer as takeaways."

And not forgetting a curated playlist for what’s a trip to France without the ethereal melodies of Debussy’s Clair De Lune?

The meal opens nicely with the zesty Salade Lyonnaise. The foie gras is especially well-tempered, and blends with the French beans and poached egg for a memorable taste experience.

The Quenelles De Poisson is a fascinating fusion dish. The supple fish mousse is unmistakably French, yet its flavours are reassuringly local. It’s the culinary equivalent of travelling to a foreign land and suddenly seeing someone you know from back home. Familiar yet delightful.

Meanwhile, the spatzle complements the Choucroute au Poulet Grille (sauerkraut with grilled chicken) beautifully.

Overall, Cadeaux De France is an enjoyable experience. A nice meal with an atmospheric touch. It soothes our yearning for travel, if only for a little while.
