Light enough to carry single-handedly yet sturdy enough to hold a plethora of good eats, the afternoon tea set by The Champignons Cake Shop travels well and makes for great Instagram fodder.

While the last iteration of their afternoon tea saw the likes of truffle liver pâte atop toast, crab meat croquettes and macarons, the latest version (launching on June 4) includes chicken terrine with cherries, wild mushroom quiche, and something sinful dubbed Chocolate Devil Cubes. And because there's two of everything, there's no squabbling over individual bites.

Devoted to elevating the art of afternoon tea, Petit Bites Patisserie is a delivery-only outfit co-founded by two master pastry chefs with 35 years' worth of combined experience. Safe to say, the proof is in the pudding: the most comprehensive afternoon tea we've had to date, the Grande Japanese Afternoon Tea presents 16 types of sweet and savoury Japanese and Western confections with jams, spreads and teas too.

Small touches lend the set a Japanese slant, from sneaking bonito flakes into a sandwich—so you wonder where this explosion of umami is coming from—to choosing flavour combos such as matcha and adzuki. But our favourite bite has to be the Taiyo, an original take on the beloved curry puff and an exciting way of exercising French patisserie skills upon a quintessentially Malaysian snack.

TATLER TIP: While chef Wing Siew is known for founding a respected pastry school, chef Leslie Teong has ample experience catering to Malaysian royals.

Presented in pretty blue boxes, the Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur's afternoon tea requires zero set up. The contents of the day are left up to the pastry chef—think of it as a dessert omakase, if you will—and may include savoury sandwiches stuffed with Coronation chicken salad, or sweets such as lemon-glazed éclairs, coconut cream tarts and raspberry-lychee lamingtons, but not forgetting the customary scones with sides of honey butter and strawberry black pepper jam.
