Caretaker’s Cottage is probably the most internationally acclaimed Australian bar of the moment, and arguably the most modest. The team—Rob Libecans, Ryan Noreiks, and Matt Stirling—might insist it’s a pub, not a bar, but the cocktails, acoustics, and attention to detail tell a different story.

Housed in a 19th-century bluestone cottage tucked behind Wesley Place, it feels at once rustic and rarefied. Guinness flows freely, yes, but so do some of the best drinks in the country. The House Martini, glacial and precise, could double as a spiritual awakening. The Zombie Milk Punch, meanwhile, a dark rum, chamomile mezcal, and Amaretto number, crowned with toasted Campari gel, proves that playfulness and perfection can happily coexist.

A custom-built Pitt and Giblin sound system fills the tiny twin rooms and adjoining lawn with impeccable warmth, making this space less a watering hole than a sanctuary for serious drinkers. Call it a pub, a bar, or a higher calling, it’s Melbourne hospitality distilled to its purest form.
