Kyoto’s precise mixology finds a home in this Prohibition-era speakeasy

Tucked behind an unassuming door disguised as a traditional storefront in Kyoto, Bee’s Knees brings the spirit of a 1920s Prohibition-era speakeasy to Japan’s ancient capital. Conceived by the acclaimed Toru Ariyoshi and Kosei Sugury, the space blends American cocktail culture with the exacting precision of Japanese mixology. Inside, an intimate space with brick accents, vintage furnishings and a soulful soundtrack of classic hip-hop and funk sets a relaxed tone. The menu spotlights creative twists on Prohibition classics, alongside signatures infused with regional Japanese ingredients like local citrus, green tea and artisanal spirits. The staff is warm, charismatic and unpretentious, making both cocktail lovers and curious travelers feel right at home.
