Colonial yellow buildings, cobblestone pavements and two soaring camphor trees frame this sanctuary for traditional Portuguese cuisine in Macau’s most picturesque neighbourhood

As you get to the edge of St Lazarus, the high-rises suddenly vanish, and cobblestones appear underfoot. Yellow colonial buildings line narrow lanes that could be Lisbon, if Lisbon had somehow drifted east. And there, tucked behind an unassuming entrance, lies a courtyard that stops you mid-stride. Two camphor trees dominate the space. They have been here long enough to witness history. Now their branches spread wide over tables where people enjoy Portuguese cuisine. Chef Pedro Almeida runs the kitchen inside one of the three buildings. His menu reads like a survey of Portuguese comfort cooking: piri piri chicken that arrives glistening from the grill, cool and tender octopus salad, and pork cheeks braised until they surrender.

Tatler Tip

Come for lunch on a weekday when the courtyard is quieter. Order the piri piri chicken and a pitcher of house wine, then take your time. Afterwards, wander the St Lazarus streets, the galleries and shops deserve as much attention as the meal.

Must Try
