Initially founded as Designscape Architects by Koh Choon Ngee and Tew Hwei Ching back in 2004, DS Architects was later established under its current name in 2021. The two directors tell us their team is small but highly skilled, trained to understand all aspects of architecture and take projects from the initial design proposal to the final construction stage. The boutique firm's expertise spans a diverse range of typologies, including apartments, landed residences, hotels and hospitality projects, offices, and even industrial buildings.
At the heart of DS Architects' design DNA is putting clients at the centre of every project, actively involving them in design discussions. "We craft each project around the client's brief rather than the latest trends that can win publicity," the team shares. "Our works are highly personalised with long-term use in mind, as well as considerations of cost and maintenance." The team also believes that good designs must be deliverable, stating that "unrealistic presentations are just nice graphic renders".
"I'm a modernist at heart, brought up in tropical Singapore, and I believe that any design must first be functional, meeting human needs and harmonising with the site’s climate," Koh says. "At DS Architects, we harness the timeless language of the modern movement and infuse the principles of architectural climate treatment as our key tool for creative design, with a garnish of material expression as a highlight."
Tew adds: "Our designs are crafted to reflect the unique identity and aspirations of our clients, creating timeless spaces that blend form and function. Every space tells a story; it's a unique solution to the problems of its time, incorporating new materials and construction methods, and answering to the character and lifestyle of the client." Her and Koh's work continues to be fuelled by a commitment to crafting designs that are purposeful, sustainable, and deeply human-centric.
